I'd believe that this one had the rum in it. Bitter with the coffee grounds flavor. Fortunately the vanilla is light, not much more that an oak barel taste. Fairly rich, sweet on the lips. Dark roast malt but only a little of the sourish charred flavor. Hops are quite tangy and give a good balance. Kind of winey.

Surprisingly drinkable and pleasant. Again a lot of grain flavor. Bitter aftertaste.

The main event. On-tap at the source, on to the beer:

A tanned head sits on top this black bodied beer with red hues. The nose is promising, feautring some coffee roast and a dose of vanilla. Taste is promising too, though lighter in intesnity as I hoped for. Flavors of vanilla, chocoalte, and some smoke mingle in this medium bodied beer. Despite the listed 8.4% ABV, its characters seems closer to 5-something, especially in taste, body heft, and booze. While I did hope for more, it is an easy drinking porter which would make a good one to finish at.

On-tap at The Big Cheese

A: The pour is a dark brown color with some reddish highlights and a creamy tan head.

S: Charred and roasted malts are there up front with nice notes of sweet vanilla coming in behind those. Toffee and molasses provide the bulk of the sweetness. Hints of coffee and dark chocolates are also present.

T: Very, very heavy on the roast with a bit of a charred and burnt sugar flavor. A little licorice flavor is in there along with molasses and toffee. Plenty of vanilla, especially as the beer warms up, but not overdone.

M: Medium in body with a moderate level of carbonation and a bit of creaminess on the mouthfeel.

O: Maybe a bit too much roast, but good otherwise. Wouldn't have guessed this beer was so strong, either.

Sampled on 9/24/2010 on the way to the kennel in San Bernardino.

Pours dark brown, hazy, and viscous, thin beige head, little to no retention or lace.

Aroma is of roast and chemicals (burnt plastic and rubber) but also of sweet carmel. No booze present.

Flavor is of roast, carmel, viscosity, rubber, hint of vanilla, and burnt-ness.

Body is heavy, like a very robust porter. It's got drinkability because there is no booze flavor.

Tick.
