The Black is Beautiful initiative, the brainchild of Weathered Souls Brewing Company in San Antonio, has been a wonderful initiative to support. This version, brewed by the masters at Firestone Walker, has been my favorite of the five I've sampled (so far). Gorgeous dark color with a nice, beige head. The smell was wonderful, as the bourbon aging stood out, as well as the cocoa and vanilla. The first taste reminded me of the latest in the Parabola series I just enjoyed last month. Strong bourbon flavor with cocoa, vanilla and espresso notes also palatable. The molasses adds a touch of sweetness to it. It's medium bodied, surprisingly smooth but also notably potent, at 10% ABV. I've been glad to support this initiative, and can't wait to finish off the two four-packs I purchased.

Appearance: Black with a generous-sized foamy dark beige head that slowly faded. A very good looking Imperial Stout.
Smell: Roasted malts, moderate bourbon aromas, and some bready notes. The nose is pretty good.
Taste: The taste profile features roasted malt notes, mild bourbon, and some mild brown sugar notes. The finish dries out featuring the roast malts lingering to the end. The beer has a subdued alcohol presence.
Mouth-feel: Medium bodied with a generous level of carbonation. Nice body fitting for the beer.
Overall: A nice partial bal-aged stout. The Black is Beautiful concept is intriguing to me, having multiple brewers brew their own take on a single recipe. Firestone Walker did good with their version. I'll have to try some of the other brewer's take but they have a pretty high bar to compare to.
