We're walking a line with Houses in Motion. The balance of sweet toffee and caramel cereal goodness emanating from this barleywine made with wheat and central coast white wine juice is just the start. Overlay a year of maturation in wheat whiskey barrels plus layers of coffee beans, cocoa nibs, and cinnamon spice - your senses will Remain in Light.

Was going through my Firestone Walker collection and the adjuncts on this 2022 vintage made me think this would be a good breakfast beer. I was right. Wheatwines are a great Barleywine alternative, it’s strong but not as thick and boozy. Gold/bronze color, foggy with a vibrant particulate presence, very thin to clear edging. This one has strong cocoa scents, medium coffee, and mild cinnamon plus a barrel undercurrent. Medium bodied, very clean, crisp for a barrel aged beer, subtle booze. A winner of a beer much better than rated, and if I get another I’ll have it fresh.

Cellared 1.5 years. Orangey brown pour, khaki foam head. The adjuncts star in the nose, especially the coffee and cinnamon. Orange and coffee with cocoa and cinnamon right behind run away with this taste complexion, whiskey is next wheat is barely there. Body is normal but want more bite, light and thinner for style, barrel character is so limited

12 ounce bottle into a snifter. A 2022 release, had 8/29/23.

Pours a cloudy brownish orange, with a one inch foamy head and some foamy lacing. Aromas of caramel, chocolate, some coffee and whiskey, light oak, a little cinnamon. Flavors of whiskey, caramel, coffee, malt, some chocolate, some wheat and oak, faint cinnamon. Smooth, a good medium body, appropriately carbonated.

Has a pretty solid base and a good barrel presence. The add- ins all show: the coffee and chocolate with a light touch and the cinnamon with an even lighter touch- which is appropriate for this. Very enjoyable.

Obtained a bottle courtesy of @Resistance88 12-6-22. 2022 edition consumed for review 6-9-23.

Beer poured a reddish-brown with no head to speak of.

Nose is nice, getting notes of cinnamon and whiskey.

Taste is an interesting mix of a large malt base that absorbs and displays the barrel. Adjuncts most noticeable are cinnamon and cocoa nibs. Coffee is faintly in the background and along with the barrel provides a balancing agent to this malt bomb. Finishes a tad sweet but not cloyingly so.

Mouthfeel is thinner with the extra sugar in the beer.

Overall an interesting beer that was fun to try and tasty.

12oz bottle received as a gift from a friend. No bottled on date. This is the 2022 vintage (No. 01)

Look: It pours a light brown color that verges on amber with a rim of tan-colored head and lots of very small particulate floaties. Otherwise, it is fairly clear.

Smell: It smells boozy - definitely evident that this beer was whiskey-barrel aged with notes of vanilla and caramelized Candi sugar. It also smells very malty and rich. I can faintly detect chocolate in the nose along with some stewed fruit. I cannot say that I detect the coffee and cinnamon notes. As this warms, I get a nice toasted coconut note...combined with the other flavors, it is reminiscent of a chocolate-covered macaroon or a Mounds candy bar. If this was a blind beer, I may have thought that this is a Belgian beer like a Dubbel or a Weizenbock beer that has been barrel-aged. From the nose, it reminds me of the Dogwood Winter Ale (2003 Whiskey-Barrel Aged) Dubbel beer that was one of the beers that really got me seriously interested in craft beer.

Taste: The flavors definitely mirror the nose. I get lots of whiskey barrel character up front - caramel and toffee notes, vanilla, charred notes, some chocolate, raisins. The finish is long with mild bitter notes along with oaky whiskey flavor and there is a nice warming sensation in the throat. Faint, spicy cinnamon on the finish. Toasted coconut and chocolate-covered macaroon/Mounds flavors as it warms.

Feel: The mouthfeel is nice - it is medium bodied with nice, spritzy carbonation. I think that the level of carbonation prevents this beer from feeling too sweet or boozy on the palate.

Overall: I think that this is an interesting and fairly well-made beer. I have not had a wheatwine in a long time and this is my first wheatwine review. For me, it falls a bit short because I have had many other lower ABV beers that had as much flavor or more than this beer yet this one is a whopping 11.2% ABV. I also find it very hard to smell or taste the coffee and cinnamon flavors.
