Stillwater Artisanal Ales "Gose Gone Wild World Tour! - Phuket"
22 fl. oz. brown glass bottle without production codes or freshness dating
$5.50 @ Kunda Beverage, King of Prussia, PA
Look: Hazy golden body. Short head of bright white foam. Very good head retention for a sour beer; it even leaves some lacing behind.
Smell: Lemongrass, salt, citrus, acidity, pepper. Interesting.
Taste: Tart and gently mineralish but not puckeringly sour. The lemon grass and chili pepper come through clearly giving it quite a unique side. The citrus and mango come through as well but those are more common flavors used in sour beers. Low level bitterness; dry, gently acidic finish with a little bit of peppery spiciness and a fleck of saltiness lingering. After a few sips it leaves a little bit of a burn on the lips.
Feel: Medium to medium-light in body with a gentle caress on the tongue. The acidity, pepper, and salt give it a secondary feel that cannot be ignored.
Overall: Refeshing and interesting!

22oz bottle. No dating information found.
Clear, straw colored body. Brief fizzy, white head. No lacing. There is a visible sediment layer, and when the bottle is swirled, the body turns murky.
Aroma definitely expresses some mango fruit, and there is a slight pepper presence.
Taste is sour, with flavors of mango fruit and lemon grass. The end brings out the salt. Not much of a pepper influence.
Medium mouth feel. Some tooth scraper action going on. Kind of a dry finish. Very good carbonation.
The peppers are not a big deal, but the fruit, sour taste goes well with the salt.

Poured from a 22 ounce bomber. Pours a cloudy light orange, almost mango color. The smell is very tart. The lemongrass is also noticeable. The taste is very similar. I'm having a tough time tasting the chili, but am getting the mango and sea salt. Nice light beer that is tart, but still pretty easy to drink.

Poured into a fifteen ounce mug the same temperature as the beer. Pours a pale straw with little head. Opaque. No lacing.
Smells both tart and sour. Some lemon.
Taste follows the nose with sour and briny flavors with added salt. Possibly some lemon zest. Lime. Certainly not beer.
Sour enough to pucker your lips.
Despite the positive reviews I've read this brew has little to offer to me. Perhaps gose should be relegated to a class of its own outside the beer nomenclature. Several of my beer drinking friends agree.

this is gorgeous beer, one thats been hanging out in my fridge awhile and was finally time to crack. this base gose is one of the better, nice and funky along with the tartness, a high water mark for the mixed fermentation type goses. here, the mango addition is the most noticeable of the added ingredients, it makes the beer look like orange juice in the glass, and has that characteristic sweet tang in the nose and the flavor, super genuine mango, and lots of it. the lemon grass gives it a springy lightness and a higher herbaceous fresh botanical brightness that really makes it scream warm weather. i love it with the mango in aroma and in flavor. i expected a little more from the thai peppers, there is a little warming heat as it goes down, but not as much flavor as hoped for. i was admittedly enjoying this one with some spicy food, so there could be a little bit of palate confusion as to where the spice was originating from, but it seems more the food than the beer to me. i love the way it all comes together, so much mango goodness and enough salt and pepper to balance it, keep it interesting, and let the base beer be appreciated in the context of these additives. killer beer, my only regret was that i had only the one bottle...
