I am running through the backlog here at Chez Woody & it means that The CANQuest (tm) is in high gear! Bottles are really on the decline, which both helps & hurts my cause. It helps since I am the creator & founder of The CANQuest (tm) & it heartens me to see so many CANs now on the market. It hurts because there are so many CANs on the market & I just CANnot keep up!

From the CAN: "A rotationally hopped Double India Pale Ale by Stillwater Artisanal (see bottom for details)." Batch #2 features an abundance of Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo hops.

Ooh, this sounds great! Remember, I am a self-avowed, self-described hophead. I beCAN with a Crack! of the vent, followed by a gentle Glug & then an in-glass swirl. The latter raised just under two fingers of dense, foamy, rocky, bone-white head with good retention, leaving nice lacing in its wake. Color was an oh-so-slightly-hazy Yellow-Gold (SRM = 4 - 5). Nose smelled strongly of citrus fruits - grapefruit, lemon, orange with Simcoe the Kitty doing her catty business in the background on a bed of biscuit. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, actually a little on the light side for the style. The initial taste was a wash of intense bitterness followed by citrus, pine, light tropical fruits, Simcoe's cattiness, peach and dry biscuit malt. Yum! I really liked the way that so many hop strains were interwoven without rendering it an undrinkable mess, as I have exbeerienced in the past, not necessarily from Stillwater Artisanal, but enough to be memorable. Finish was dry, bitter & just the way I like a DIPA to be. Not tropical, not laden with caramel malt, not juicy, but just an orgy of hops. Mmm.

Forewarning: I'm not sure if this review is the correct batch, but the photo of the can is identical, and this one's hop is Citra.

L: Hazy, slightly translucent straw-golden. The head is small, white, with medium-poor retention. A small thin head remains, leaving wisps of lacing.

S: Fragrant lemon, orange peel, powdered lime, pineapple, candied citrus, cracker malt, grass, dankness. Simcoe-like.

T: Follows the nose. Fragrant Persian lime peel and Meyer lime, candied orange, lemon, and lime peel; and powdered lemonade mix. Cracker malt backbone, barely noticeable. On the back end, a bit of mint and dankness, no bitterness, but it dries out slightly.

F: Medium-bodied, moderately carbonated, balanced with a smooth balanced finish. Neither sweet nor dry. Crisp and clean.

O: A solid IPA. It's supposed to be Citra, but is very Simcoe-like, too. A crisp, clean, refreshing "lemonade" IPA.

In what seems like a throwback imperial IPA, a time when bitterness reigned supreme and any floral, fruity or other flavoring hop additions largely seemed like a waste of good hops, Stillwater steers away from the trendy "juiciness" of IPA and gives us old schoolers a taste of yesteryear.

Hazy golden and capped with a frothy white lather, the beer's nose is sharply citrusy, herbal and piney. Light on caramel and honey, the beer's malty upstart is shyly of granola and cracker-like sweetness.

Any sweetness is largely short lived as the malts drop out quickly. The hop flavor rolls along, shedding a layer of white grapefruit and orange peel on the middle palate. Lemon, lemongrass and an overall grassy taste extends into finish where a deep, resinous and spicy bitterness awaits.

Leafy, stemmy and laced with the grip of hemp and chive, the medium full ale seems lighter on the palate from the drying effects of hops, the elevated alcohol and fleeting malt balance. Wavvy is a strong shoutout to the early years of imperial IPA, even as its gullet gripping bitterness extends deep into the next taste.

16 oz. can

Pours foggy hazy gold with a creamy white foam head. Smells like peach, apricot, mango, melons, orange citrus, grapefruit, pineapple, creamy lactose, caramelized crackery malts, with dank resinous woodsy floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Tastes like peach, apricot, mango, melons, orange citrus, grapefruit rind, pineapple, lactose, caramelized crackery malts, with dank resinous woodsy floral earthy herbal grassy pine. Feels medium-full bodied, creamy with moderate smooth carbonation. Overall a really nice DIPA with lactose.

A IIPA from Stillwater hopped with (I believe according to the bottom of the can) Centennial, Simcoe, and Amarillo. Batch 2. Poured from a can into a Woodburn tulip. The pour is light orange and quite hazy with 2 fingers of fine white head with good retention. The nose is all oranges, lemons, and other citrus fruits.

Medium body with a firm feel and a nice hoppy flavor. There is a fair amount of malty sweetness backing everything up. I get flavors of fresh bread with marmalade, orange zest, lemon peel, and honey. The bitterness is there, but the malt more than balances it out. Finishes with a pleasant fruity sweetness. Overall a really good beer. Outstanding IPAs and IIPAs are getting easier and easier to find. It's a great time to be a hophead!
