Beer is typically fermented in a very calculated, controlled manner with pure strains of brewers’ yeast. Our Kriek beer is instead fermented by exposing it to the untamed yeasts and bacteria that are native to our Brewery. We affectionately call this unrestrained, wild amalgamation our House Funk. This blend is unique to Rivertown and this unusual, spontaneous process, involving over a year of fermentation in oak wine barrels and addition of tart cherries, is what gives this beer its’ distinctive flavor; sweet, acidic, funky and vinous with a tangy, lingering aftertaste.

``Leftovers'' from a beer tasting hosted by Rivertown at Party Town (Florence, KY).
Poured from a growler into a Rivertown tulip. The pour is a little hazy and a medium reddish amber with a nice two fingers of fluffy white head. Retention is not bad for a sour. Sharp, vinegar-like nose with a generous dose of cherries and just a hint of barnyard funk. Nothing objectionable at all on the nose, but I'd like the fruit to be a little more assertive in a beer like this.
Light body with a very pleasant, fruity, sweet-and-sour flavor. Not aggressively sour at all, just sour enough to remind you this is spontaneously fermented. Very little graininess up front, just a dry, acidic twang and then a mild oaky flavor and some grapey, winey fruit notes that pinch your cheeks a bit and brighten the palate. I do get a tiny bit of that Rivertown lactic note on the finish that I seem to get in all Rivertown sours, but it has never bothered me very much nor detracted from my drinking pleasure. I do wish the beer was a little more effervescent, but seeing as how it's on tap, I can't really penalize Rivertown for that (it's still more "gassed" than just about any Rivertown bottle I've ever had - their bottled beers have always been seriously undercarbonated in my opinion). Carbonation aside, the beer is nice and firm and the feel is right for the astringency.
Overall, a very nice beer from a brewery that I really want to like, but have been let down by more than once. The cherries are well-integrated and provide their own fruity sour notes as well as a natural sweetness. It reminds me much more of a New Glarus fruit beer than a Belgian Oude Kriek (which I'm sure it's not aspiring to be, but those are the Kriek beers I have had the most experience with). However, the cherries are not so pronounced that it tastes like a fruit beer. It tastes like a sour with lots and lots of cherries. My first impression was that this beer was sweetened, but after a second sip I no longer believed that. I'm really impressed by this beer and would definitely buy it if Rivertown decides to bottle it.
