The latest in The Party Source's series of locally brewed and barrel aged beers. This one was brewed at Rivertown and is the first dark beer in the series. Planked Porter is an American Porter that has been aged in fresh Kentucky Bourbon barrels for over two months; it is also the most limited Quaff Bros release, being available on draft-only.

A-Poured from my half growler into a snifter, this porter is a clear deep reddish-brown. There is no head whatsoever; not sure if that's a result of the day-old half growler fill, bourbon, or the carbonation. Barely any lacing.

S-Sweet bourbon and vanilla hits first but is not over the top like in Rivertown's Vanilla Espresso Porter. Hints of cherries and chocolate malt come through but most of the porter characteristics are hidden by the bourbon and woodiness (not that I'm complaining).

T-The bourbon is not as strong as the smell upon first sip. Tastes a bit like brownie batter but not super strong. Alcohol taste is apparent. Again, doesn't taste much like a porter; more like an American Strong Ale. The base beer seems a bit thin and insipid... the barrel aging helps but can't completely make up for the lack of character beneath.

M-A little thin and lacking in carbonation. I guess I can attribute that to the growler being half filled, but when it was being filled there didn't appear to be much carbonation either. Regardless, I think it could use a bit more CO2; this is borderline flat. Slight alcohol burn finishes up the mouthfeel. Not exactly inviting another sip.

O-I'm sad to say this may be the most disappointing entry in the Quaff Bros series yet. It seems like the porter could use some tweaking and maybe more time in a barrel. The only redeeming quality about this beer is the smell, but putting any beer in a bourbon barrel automatically helps it out in this department.
