Frankie Imperial Stout is brewed to be a complex, yet smooth drinking wintertime favorite. The 2022 Frankie has huge flavors of roast, chocolate and dried fruits coming from a unique combination of an expressive English ale yeast and an American yeast used during fermentation. Frankie exhibits deep aromas of dried cherry, fruit and Belgian chocolate, and is deceptively easy to drink. Made with high-end cocoa powder exclusively from Valrhona, a premier French chocolatier, as well as cacao nibs from TCHO, an artisanal chocolate maker in San Francisco, this year’s Frankie is a truly unique offering.
This popular winter warmer has been aged 12 months in American Whiskey Barrels from local distillery Westward.

Don't really remember this beer. It's barrel aged, which I love and gave it high marks. Don't remember the bottle, so probably had on tap somewhere 2 to 3 years ago. This is the 2022 vintage as the newer ones have a lower ABV.

Pours a finger of brown head into my snifter. Retention is slightly below average and the head fades in about a minute. Initial lacing looks good. Body is pitch black. Looks ok so far.
Nose is soy sauce. Underneath that, a heavy dose of chocolate. Can’t pick up anything else, as with all barrel aged beers - this smells terrible.
Flavor has a good amount of wood up front, which is nice, soy sauce hits in the finish. Port wine flavors, cherry. Very rich, chocolate comes and goes. I don’t love it but I can appreciate it, it works, there is a lot of flavor.
Carbonation is medium-low, there is a bite from the alcohol that mingles in as well and brightens the mouthfeel. Body is extremely thick, and certainly somewhat cloying. You feel the sweetness more than you taste it, the taste is moderately sweet at most, balanced by the alcohol and a noticeable bitterness, in that regard it’s decently balanced. Overall it’s too cloying to be all that great, but it does what it can to stay palatable.
Drinkability is ok, it’s definitely a sipper. It has some good flavors, some not so good. The alcohol is not much of a problem, the cloying nature is.
Appearance turned out ok, lacing was very minimal.
Overall a pretty classic barrel aged stout, soy sauce, cloying, rich, lots of flavor. It has some redeeming qualities, but even the flavor is diminished when you have to smell the soy sauce oxidation as you stick your nose in the glass for a sip.
