The Maple Coronet barley wine is brewed to be a complex, and slightly sweet early springtime treat. Coming in at 11% ABV the beer is crafted on a foundation of fine English Maris Otter malt which brings a nutty richness and full roundness to the beer. Three different types of caramel malts exhibit toffee and tones of cherry, plum and raisin. Maple syrup was added during the run-off of the wort, as well as during fermentation, to provide extra sugars. The maple sweetness is not overpowering and integrates into the beer without being cloyingly sweet.
Aged for six months on Heaven Hill bourbon barrel.

Sampling a cellar temp 500 ml bottle poured into my snifter. Loving the Pileated Woodpecker on the label! No date stamp on label though.
Beer pours a deep ruby to richer garnet color with very little light passing through my glass.
A creamy khaki colored head foams up on the pour about 1 cm and fades slowly to a sturdy surface covering. very dense lattice on swirls in my glass. Beer looks very nice and head retention is great for a higher ABV brew.
Aroma on this beer is surprisingly mild, I do get some toffee and a little bourbon and charred wood, but not a robust nose. No fusol notes and no hop character to speak of at this point.
First sip reveals a medium body with relatively smooth texture and very fine, gentle carbonation. Not much coating or sticky feel on each swallow.
Flavor is on the sweeter side but also slightly muted, in similar fashion to the nose. I do get some toffee and hints of maple. Finish has some bourbon and charred wood with a bit of black peppery booze too. No accompanying warming, so decently hidden ABV. I love the label but had higher hopes for the beer. It isnt bad at all, just seems to not be as bold as I had hoped from description. Still glad to have tried it and would gladly drink another one!

Barrel Aged Maple Coronet from Migration Brewing - Mystery Beer #3 from @muchloveforhops3 in BSBIF #1. A 500 mL capped and waxed bottle. Reviewed 06/01/24 (Review 3211). Note that I use DD/MM/YY protocol.
Undated bottle. Stored at 34 degrees F at home. Served at 63.1 degrees F in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. The final temperature was 64.5 degrees F.
Appearance 4.
First pour: Medium Amber (SRM 12), slight haze.
Body: Deep Amber (SRM 15), hazy. Under direct light, same. When rear-lite, same. Mostly chill haze because it clears as it warms.
Head: Average (Maximum two cm, aggressive center pour), beige, medium density, average retention, dropping to a uniform 0.2 cm crown and a thin partial cap.
Lacing: None.
Aroma: 4 Begins slightly sweet with dates? Figs? Maple? Brown sugar? Weakens as it breathes.
Flavor: 4 Begins slightly sweet and dark fruity with a bite at the end. No hops, no yeast. Becomes more malty and sweeter as it warms, but never cloying. Hint of maple and what tastes like bourbon to the end bite. No barrels (no vanillyl, tannin). Mild gastric warming.
Palate: 4 Medium to full; a bit syrupy; lively but soft carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 3.75 (after deducting 0.25 point for undated personal container) Sweet but not cloying, distinctly a bit harsh with bourbon prior to warming, but harshness recedes by the final swallow: still no barrels. The initial “dark fruits” are probably due to the “complex malt bill”.

500ml bottle courtesy of my brother; split with him into two medium-sized pilsner-style glasses
P - deep mahogany w/ light translucence; very thin tan cap; nice color
N - wow- fairly bold and inviting; lots of maple/dark sugars and dark fruit
T - a flavorful combo of maple, cherries, dark sugars, and toffee- outstanding; light heat in the finish; just a touch of barrel, but I'm not complaining
Mf - med to med-full bodied w/ med carb; chewy
O - an excellent barrel-aged barleywine; great maple character; sweet and satisfying, while remaining balanced; really happy I was able to try this- would recommend!
