"A unique twist to an Old English recipe, the Silenus is deep mahogany in color and fills the palette with a rich malt body and faint cherry & cocoa undertones.  Dominated by fuggles hops and 5 different malts this is a beer that Old Silenus can be proud of!"

Onnitro- tap at the brewpub in Portland.

Appearance: clear, deep, ruby-brown color with a bone colored head that has excellent retention and leaves a nice coat of lacing upon tipping.

Aroma: Dark fruits and dark roasted grains with a hint of toffee and alcohol esters.

Flavor: Sweet up front but mildly bitter (IBU = 75) in the aftertaste. Very ripe dark fruits and bitter hops. Has a lingering, odd, spicy aftertaste.

Feel: Medium body seems too thin; near medium carbonation.

O: OK version of a style that I seldom find highly pleasing.

I've tried this a couple times before, but today at the brewpub (= FRESH!) was a good time for a review. A pint glass ($4) on an overcast Easter Sunday. At 75 IBU, it's close to the hoppiest thing on the beer menu; yes, that's an awful Easter bunny pun I just laid... wait, 'laid'? As in, an egg? It's contagious. Jesus...

A: Deep 'maple syrup' or 'bourbon' brown, a silty, unfilered murkiness that forms a base for a lovely finger+ of softly-tinted whiteness. Nice-looking lace, too - stacked rings of foamy speckledness.

S: A nutty, grain-sweet sniffer that really doesn't reveal a whole lot. Has a slight chemical 'cleaner' floralness that isn't so appealing.

T: Big toasted malts, grainy huskiness but with plenty of backing spice and bitterness hit right away. A little fruitiness (apple or appleskins), dusty cocoa powder, a trace of smoke and dose of nuttiness round out the flavors. It all works rather well.

M: Body is a little skimpy, a mild carbonation, with a cleaner and drier finish. Crispness due to spice rather than effervescence. Lasting bitterness. Looong lasting.

O: Called an 'Amber' on the menu, but brewed with a number of English malts and tagged an 'Old Ale' on more than one occasion...so a coin toss as to how to catagorize this one. As such, it's a decent but lacking version of either style, well-hopped but reasonably well-balanced, too. Ok for a taste, but nothing that compels a return visit.
