On nitro at the brewpub.
The beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and considerable lacing. The nose is also attractive, showcasing coffee, light dark chocolate and considerable vanilla (the beer is described as a bourbon, vanilla bean RIS- though I can't say I picked up much bourbon). The beer is definitely better on the palate, with considerable coffee, licorice, vanilla and some hoppy bitterness on the finish. Frankly, this beer really reminds me of the vanilla version of the RIS from New Holland (certainly not a criticism), though it has a bit more hoppy bitterness. Mouthfeel is a little bit thin, but is otherwise soft and creamy, with a fairly long finish. The alcohol is very well disguised, and this is not a beer I would have guessed to have 8.5% abv.
Pretty good beer... certainly not anywhere near the RIS elite, but regardless, this is a solid, easy to appreciate stout.
