Joe Z's Coconut Porter

Pours one shade shy of black with a tight, mocha-colored head. Nose expresses cocoa and toasted coconut. Taste is a bit dull - roasted malts and hints of cocoa but it all comes out more subdued than suggested by the nose. Mouthfeel is light in body with an even carbonation. Overall, the nose held lots of promise; however the rest came off a bit lackluster.

 

 

 

Thank god this didn't taste like coconut much. The tasting notes said it would, but oddly, I didn't taste it at all. Neither did either of my two buddies.

Which is good because coconut is awful and the combination with beer would be awful. In this case, I couldn't tell that there ever was coconut involved, except through the aroma, which hinted at it.

Otherwise this was a pretty good beer. Not amazing by any stretch, but worth drinking.

A - Hazy dark brown color. Laces well. Head is big but recedes quickly.

S - Not much here at all. Bread and some light molasses malts.

T - Pretty nasty. Mild coconut taste. Tastes like bark. Nowhere near enough malt here. Brown sugar malts might make more sense than the molasses approach taken here.

M - If Wormtown ever wears itself out it will be because it's incapable of crafting anywhere near a decent mouthfeel in a beer. It is their fatal flaw. I've said it before. I hope this trend changes.

D - I have no desire to drink this. Tasteless, with the mouthfeel of flat seltzer. They really really need to address their mouthfeel issues. It's getting to the point where I'm getting pissed off about it, because they have good ideas about flavor and are bold and creative in their ideas about the beers they try to make. Dark Day IIPA remains their most solid effort of the few I've tried, but even there the mouthfeel is that beer's downfall. They have something there, though. MOUTHFEEL, guys, MOUTHFEEL!!! This beer, however, is a joke and does not even approach a porter.

A: Watery brown, appearing as black. nice tan head with weak retention. Fades into some lacing after a few minutes.

S: Dark and milk chocolates, caramel sweetness, with notes of shaved coconut and berry-like fruit that follow. Very dry aroma.

T: Rich dark and milk chocolate, Almond Joys, and shaved sweetened coconut. Lighter on the coconut than was expected. Traces of coffee grinds, wood and peppery spices flow throughout the flavor. Nice classic porter aftertaste, though it ends a bit 'steely'.

M: Medium body with medium carbonation. Water and sticky. Decent finish.

D: Great! Sweet, yet balanced.

Dark murky brown light creamy head lacing.

Nose creamy porter, choc, light roast, light coconut oil toasted, caramel, malts light earthy hops.

Taste creamy rich porter light roast, a bit of chocolate, caramel , some toasted coconut, milk choc., a nutty malty flavor. As it warms the coconut and chocolate come out a little more even. A bit of earthy hops do as well. The finish is smooth and slightly dry, long lingering porter roast and a bit of coconut.

Mouth is a little creamy, med to heavier bodied with good carbonation.

Drink is pretty good, no real booze, semi dry finish, no off flavors, smooth and creamy, goes down well.

This delicious porter was brewed with Joe Z, brewer and founder of Z Street Brewery. This porter is aged with brewery roasted coconut. Poured into a snifter, FAR too cold of a pour.

A - Dark black pour though as one drinks it the blackness fades to a rich brown fudge colour. There was a nice typical dense light tan one and a half finger porter head that fades at a normal rate to leave a halo and whispy clouds.

S - Sweet malts with some very light coconut aroma. A bit too muted on the nose. There was a faint hint of chocolate dancing through the aroma.

T - Sweet malts upfront followed by roasted malt characteristics. Then suddenly a big, assertive roasted coconut flavour hits. Bold, earthy, roasted nutty coconut instead of the typical over the top sweetness one typically finds with coconut brews. This one has a deep, complex nutty coconut on the end that is just great.

M - Smooth with just the right amount of carbonation, which is a little more than normal. Very nice.

D - Other than a FAR too cold pour this is a very good coconut porter. Aroma needs to be amped up a bit in my opinion but the flavour profile is spot on. Delicious!
