1 litre red aluminum can purchased at a Tops supermarket in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
4.70% ABV.
HEAD: Fills the glass completely - loads of foam. Khaki colour. Creamy, frothy, soft-looking. Retention is excellent - about 10 minutes.
BODY: Dark cola brown-black. Opaque. No yeast can be seen within.
Appears highly carbonated.
AROMA: Brown bread, black bread, pumpernickel, something in the licorice or fennel or anise family. No hop profile. I know schwarz malts must be in there, but I wouldn`t smell them if offered this brew blindfolded, though I do get some generic malty sweetness. Cream.
Aromatic intensity is average.
TASTE: Matches the aroma in every respect. But the balance is a little loose; this isn`t a gestalt whole of a beer. I do like the bready leanings, but it delves a bit into that cola profile I always loathe in inferior schwarzbiere.
TEXTURE: Smooth, wet, and medium-bodied. Creamy yet awkwardly thin, matching the mouthfeel of a badly poured watered-down Guinness.
OVERALL: Unremarkable fare, and well below par for a good expression of the style in my opinion. I`ll happily drink the litre I purchased, but I`d be reticent to recommend this to others - even in the beer wasteland that is Thailand.
