On tap at VBC in Madison, Wisconsin. Served in a tulip glass.
Pours a dark caramel brown body, slightly darker cola hue, one finger white head, short retention, no lacing. Just about right for the style. Smells of caramel, toffee, a bit of boozy bourbon heat, light toasted oak, a bit of a leather-like sharp astringency. Slightly earthy. The heat seems to be even more noticeable as it warms. Flavour brings less of the sweetness that I was expecting based on the nose; still a fair bit of toffee, lighter caramel, touch of earth. The bourbon is a bit hot here, and contributes a bit of smoky astringency, with a slightly more boozy finish than I prefer. A bit of sweet grain, but overall it seemed to be a bit less sweeter than I was expecting. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, good carbonation, plenty of depth with an increasingly hot yet astringent finish. An overall decent barrel-aged English barleywine; it's nice that a local brewpub would brew something like this but if you're looking for a more well-rounded barleywine, I'd recommend looking up Revolution's Straight Jacket or something similar.

Tons of caramel but boozy, especially for this ABV. Not as much bourbon flavor/aroma as I'd expect given how different it tastes from the base beer. Maybe could use a bit of time to mellow out. I appreciate keeping it local but I fear this might've been so much better if Vintage hadn't used Yahara barrels.
