1.099 OG 31 IBUS 9.2% ABV
Listed on the menu as a "Belgian Barleywine"
Served to me in a fancy chalice, looks dark ruby in color. Smells of currents, blackberry jam, fig newtons, sweet toffee and creme brulee', tiny amounts of clove, and some alcohol booziness. However, the flavor is mostly predominated by the sweet figs, figs, and MORE figs with a short burst of peppered abbey yeastiness /earthy hops in the middle of the sip and a drying alcohol hotness in the finish that leaves me reaching for a glass of water. So the nose comes across as somewhat more complex than the flavor does... Texture is dead on with the enveloping mouthfeel of a good barleywine, needs to be sipped to be fully appreciated.
In summary, this one behaves like a slightly sweeter-than-average barleywine with some Belgian-styled nuances, which seems to be just what they were aiming for. I can't help but wonder how this one would develop if a keg or two were left in a cellar for a good while to smooth out the rough edges....

The return of our "Chalice Beers"! DeVille is a high-octane Belgian-inspired abbey ale, with an engagingly bold fruity/ spicy character, a warming alcohol glow, and a relatively dry and clean finish (for such a big beer). "The cadillac of abbey ales".
