2018 vintage on draft. Very creamy head, with moderate oxidative notes on the dry, vinous nose. Red wine, strong oak, and prominent iodine and oxidation almost like a RIS mixed with some Baltic porter. Definitely showing some age, but it integrates well into the beer which is also still quite expressive.

Had on tap. I actually like the non-barrel aged version more. Felt like the bourbon barrels took away some of the nuance of the flavor and smell. Cut the bitterness a little, but lost the sweeter notes and the rich malt backbone felt diminished a bit.

2014 vintage had on tap. Smelled and tasted like green/sour apples especially as it warmed up. Didn't pick up much bourbon or stout characteristics. Thin bodied with moderate carbonation. Was a bummer because I was really excited for this beer.

Bourbon taste a but strong for my taste. And thinner than what I expect in a stout but overall I enjoyed it. Bought 2013 and 2014 vintage non BA versions in bombers at their limited release sale for Madison Craft Beer week. Sold out of BA.

Black in color. Light tan head. No lacing. Aroma is mostly bourbon with some sweet vanilla and a touch of roast. Taste starts off with a bit of char, some chocolate, then the bourbon kicks in. Sweet, vanilla, and oak. Chalky. Raisin and port on the finish. But the finish is quick, too quick for an RIS. Heavier mouthfeel, but not thick or syrupy. Would actually expect a little more. Overall a decent BA beer, but no where near what the other ratings would suggest.

3 oz tap pour into a tasting glass at Vintage Brewing Co. in Madison, WI during Madison beer week.
A - Pitch black in the glass, the pour has a low but well-retained tan head for the booze content of this beer.
S - Roasted chocolate malt blends well with the rich bourbon and wood aroma that includes mellow hints of vanilla through the finish.
T - Thick, strong roasted chocolate malt and warm bourbon alcohol give the flavor a well-rounded and balanced potency.
M - Medium-full-bodied with a warming, smooth, robust texture that finishes mildly acrid bitter.
O - What a great barrel-aged RIS that's' well-balanced and nuanced, not over-the-top like a lot of barrel-aged beer seem to be as of late.
