Dark brown reddish color with a thin head with medium retention and leaving some laces.
Citrusy and pine aroma with hints of honey and roasted malts.
Sweet and hoppy citrus flavor with notes of caramel, dark fruits, pine resin, licorice and some toffee. Quite dry and bitter aftertaste.
Medium body with low carbonation.
A brew that combine British fruity flavor with a decent amount of hops with American influence.

On key keg at Mason & Taylor, Bethnal Green, London.

Murky amber brown with steady cream colored film that leaves spider webs. Cat pissy hops, funky lemon and acidic black malts, not all in a good way.
Meaty char, hint of raspberry, dark rye, tar then orange Fanta and pine sap hops.
Marmite and ash hit, then numbing linger. Medium, rich, chewy.

Brings the bitter but lots of gooey malts, too. What hops smell New World but taste California? Anyone who claims that Black IPAs are just hoppy porters should taste this: plenty of malts, plenty of hops.

had a third pint of this at reading beer festival, pitch black and very aromatic, stong hops and citrus.

despite being an ipa i expected it to be more like a porter or stout, but it was very hoppy and more light than an ipa, like an ipa! which makes sense i guess.

fairly bitter, with less compexity than your average quality porter, yet interesting.

it isnt really my style but its is a quality ale.

Handpump halfpint at the Sebright Arms.

A: Clear, very dark brown body with a finger of off-white froth. Good retention, spotty lace. Not bad.

S: Nice hoppiness: floral and fruity, with strong tropical presence. A touch of coffee from the malt. Not half bad.

T: Fruity hops up front, with even parts grapefruit + mango. Lightly roasty malts show up toward the end, contributing to the supremely bitter finish. Tasty.

M: Medium body with slick, light carbonation. Ok.

O: A good example of the style; there was never any confusion about whether this was a BIPA or a hoppy Porter.

Bottle from cgarvieuk, thanks man!
Black IPA from london. Pop the cap, ad am assaulted by the hop aroma. Citrus and Passion Fruit smack me in the face, nice!!
pours a dark brown, so not quite black, so a bit of a lie on the label, but I'll let it pass based on the nose!
Taste is a bit odd, and a cross between a porter and an IPA, but it doesnt fit as well as i had hoped. The hops seem to clash a bit. It is more bitter on the palate than the nose would suggest as well. more English bitter.
I was really hoping this would be great, but it is more of a battle on the palate than the harmony as i was hoping.
Mouthfeel is thick for the style, which is kind of nice with great carbonation, but it is hard to get over the clashing.
