Pours two wonderful fingers of dense white head into my Willi glass. Retention is very nice, only losing about half of the head after a few minutes. Initial lacing looks wonderful. Body is semi-dark orange, high clarity, with minimal bubbles coming up. Looks great so far.
Nose has a healthy dose of citrus and zest, small earthiness as well. Simcoe-y gooseberry comes through and really saves the day, some tropical notes come out as well. Brief malty sweetness. This smells quite nice once it has a chance to develop.
On the flavor you get some of that gooseberry, mixed with a little bit of malty sweetness, finishing with some tropical fruit. I’m glad that most of the flavors seem to translate, something all too uncommon for IPA’s with huge noses. This is really nice, the flavors compliment each other and blend well together, especially in the finish. Good use of malty sweetness to bring out the fruit too.
Carbonation is medium-low, quite soft, which actually works well. Body has some nice weight to it - medium. Sweetness is moderate. Bitterness is on the lower end for an IPA. Overall a solid mouthfeel.
Drinkability is not an issue, this is well balanced and goes down easy.
Appearance actually turned out worse than expected, lacing was barely there, only clinging to a few spots.
Unfortunately as this warms, a pretty noticeable Diacetyl flavor comes out. It’s not absolutely horrible, and I can still pick up some of the other flavors, but it lowers things for sure. Overall ok.
