Originally called "Ouden Tripel", this ancient beer has found a new élan as a regional specialty under its current name: "VanderGhinste Roodbruin".

The main ingredients of our Vanderghinste Roodbruin are malted barley, wheat, hops, water, and caramelized malts. These are used to brew a top-fermented beer.

Blending this beer with lambic beer aged in oak barrels for 18 months, results in this specific West Flanders Red-brown beer. Its typical flavour is characterized by a well-balanced, hardly noticeable sourness.

This first flavour impression is soon followed by a second pleasant discovery: a slight bitterness followed by a hint of sweetness.

Aroma is sour fruit/cherries, malts and slightly musty. The flavor is sour fruit/cherries, malts and, a hint of wood and a tart/mildly sweet/hint of sugar finish.

Poured into snifter. Murky, chocolatey brown color. Thin beige ring.

Plum nose, underlying caramel sweetness.

Sour stone fruit, unripe sourness. Less sweet than the smell, though the body's got some sweetness.

Surprisingly juicy mouthfeel. Welcome.

Good bruin.

Pours a deep red and clear. Small off white head. Fragrance of oak and stone fruit. Taste follows the nose, sour, lightly sweet with a slight bitterness.

330ml bottle into a teku. Bottled 9/12/16, so 7 years old.

Nice looking beer. Deep red body, clear when held up to the light. Small off white head shrinks to a ring. Pleasing full cherry aroma. On tasting, moderately sour with a dark fruit sweetness. Quite drying in the finish. Overall, a nicely balanced Oud Bruin.

Poured from 330mL bottle into a tulip. Bottled 7/12/22 (not sure if that's the US style date or European style date).

Appearance: rich, dark red-brown hue with no haze and a finger of fizzy tan foam atop. Looks nice.

Smell: a bit sweet and caramelly, with just enough sourness to lend a lovely candylike character; it's enticing indeed. Man, I love well-done Oud Bruin!

Taste: lightly sweet, again with a caramel character, and a little bit tart; the interplay is a bit less candylike than the aroma, however. It's good, but doesn't quite pop like the aroma.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body with a big carbonation and a decent enough creaminess.

Overall: I like this beer, although I think I like the aroma best of all.

This pours from the bottle a lovely ruddy brown. There’s a delicate aroma with a prominent sour cherry character. The sip is bright and tart, with a lingering finish.

Glass into Nucleated Tulip
Look: Dark brown-red color, pouring a 1 finger head which dissipated into a ring with lacing
Smell: Some funk, oak tannins, citric tannins, stone fruit
Taste: Lightly tart cherry, yeast funk, and light touch of oaky tannins. Finish has a touch of malt, and sweet apple/pear note.
Feel: Light-medium body, moderate carbonation, crisp
Overall: Its new to me but I enjoy it.

Poured from a 250 ml bottle into a goblet.

L - Medium brown color with a tinge of red in an opaque, somewhat murky beer. Medium tan head is weak at the pour and then disappears into a ring around the glass.

S - Nice Flanders brown aromas of moderate funk, oak barrel and low, cherry-like fruit.

T - Cherry and wood dominate the flavors, with a moderate tartness that leaves a sting in the back of your throat.

F - Medium body with light to moderate carbonation. Hops bitterness is not noticeable behind the central sourness of the beer, which is all appropriate for the style. Light alcohol presence matches the ABV.

O - This is an enjoyable beer and a nice example of the style.

Very drinkable bruin. Hazy brown red appearance with very minimal head and retention. The nose has tones of oak, prune, cherry, and fig. Taste follows the nose. Mouthfeel is moderate in body and minimal carbonation.

From a chincy little 250mL bottle, this beer pours the standard reddish brown that you'd expect from a Flanders Red-Brown Ale. Only a one finger light brown head, and this dissipates very quickly, but that seems to be standard for this style. On the nose, some roasty malts, which I don't normally get from a Flanders red, a hint of leather and must, old red wine cork, all quite subtle, but pleasant. On the palate, a bit of silky caramel sweetness that lasts throughout, and then the building sourness, which remains very gentle and mellow compared to Rodenbach Grand Cru, which I consider the benchmark for this style. There is also a pleasant roasted malt in the background, which for me is something new for this style, and not unwelcome. The sourness like I said is mellow and toned down compared to Grand Cru, which makes it slightly less refreshing as a palate cleanser when paired with food (though it still does this job well), but more inviting to just drink on its own. Overall a very good Flanders sour ale, on the mellower and sweeter side, which in this case is fine by me.

2016 bottle from BA Portland Beer Fest, drank Feb 2022. Aged beautifully. Poured garnet brown with small white head. Had a malty smell, tasted slightly sour and not too Oude Bruiny, but just enough of each to be a beautiful beer to drink. Mouthfeel was coating and right on. Completely enjoyed this and would welcome another if I ever saw one. Cheers!
