Bottle: stubby brown 500mL bottle, reasonable old school label.

Appearance: light, almost clear yellow with fine but steady carbonation. Hardly any head per the style. A little flat looking.

Aroma: oh my goodness. Smells of unpleasantly saccharin ginger with a nasty grain funk behind. Not a good start.

Taste: bleugh! This is dirty. Even nartier than the nose. The only flavour is that awful artificial ginger. Gross.

Aftertaste: the nasty ginger flavour lingers, to be joined by an equally awful grain funk flavour.

Mouth feel: pretty standard stuff - light in body with a sharp, spritzy carbonation. Unfortunately in this case it carries those bloody awful flavours too well.

Overall: this is one of the nastiest examples of ginger beer / cider I have had to date. Also it is a mistruth - not only is it not 'quality', but more importantly it is called 'Genuine Ginger Beer'. If one simply looks at the ingredients: 'Carbonated Water, Beer, SUGAR, FLAVOURING, acid, preservatives and colour. What BS. Beer with artificial ginger flavouring added called 'Genuine Ginger Beer'? Pfft.

500ml bottle into a pint glass.

A: Very fizzy, clear, pale yellow-oragne body with a white, coarse head that sticks around only because of the copious effervescence refilling it from below. It looks as much like a soda as a beer. Meh.

S: Huge ginger, some candy sugar, and just a faint touch of pale malt (I think - it's really faint). The ginger's really overwhelming everything else, but that's what it's going for. Ok.

T: Sugar, ginger, bubblegum, and just a bit of pale malt on the finish.Too sweet for a beer, but it tastes great if you think of it as a spiked ginger soda - which, of course, is exactly what it claims to be. It's actually quite enjoyable in the proper context.

M: The prickly spice of the ginger is accentuated by the overbearing fizziness. Too much.

O: Weird, but not at all bad. I love ginger beer (the soft drink), and this slightly alcoholic, malt-based version of it is really quite tasty. I wish it weren't quite as sweet, but the sweetness isn't enough to turn me off. Fun, albeit in a gimmicky way; I'm really curious about the same brewery's Alcoholic Root Beer...

Cheers!
