Notes taken at Winterfest.
A- Pours a darker brown color with some light red hues when held to the light. One finger tan head shows medium retention. Nice streaks of lace on the sides of the glass when drinking.
S- Nice roasted malts in the front of the aroma. There is a good chocolate undertone which also shows a light caramel hint and prunes. Middle of the beer shows some coffee tones which turns into light smokey malts into the ending of the aroma. There is a light hop bitterness in the ending as well.
T- Starts off with a light prune and fig undertone. This quickly gets covered up with a roasted malt and light chocolate flavor. The middle of the beer has this slight caramel tone I find but when I asked others they couldn't pick it up. It is only slight which then turns chocolate fast. The ending of the beer has a light coffee roast to it which turns a little smokey. The hops only really show up toward the very end and even that is a quick bitter bite.
M- Medium mouthfeel. Carbonation is good for the beer. Notes of chocoalte, roasted grain, and light prune. Aftertaste is light alcohol, smoked malts, chocoalte malts and light bitter hops. Medium alcohol drying on the palate. Flavors were very well balanced between hops and malts. no off flavors were present to me.
D- This beer was a fantastic drinker. I went up and got many many samples of this one. The ABV is not over the top which makes it that much of a drinker. Flavors are well balanced and nothing is over the top. I could see them making this into a regular offering or seasonal. Figure 8 really has been making their mark in the Northern Indiana brewing circle. I personally think the sky is the limit with them.
