What we have here is a collaboration between Odell and Papago -- a black IPA aged in used Deconstruction barrels. This half-pint was enjoyed at Papago's Hopageddon festival of IPAs.
Dead black. One inch of foamy, light tan head.
Odd nose. Belgian yeast, pear and banana with lacto, bretty funk and sourness. A touch of cocoa, a hint of tobacco. Weird.
Even weirder flavor. Same odd mix of tobacco, chocolate, pears and Brett funk. Mild bitterness balances the big pear syrup. A little caramel, some candy sugar.
High, prickly carbonation and moderate, smooth fizz. Tickles the tongue throughout. Some lingering yeasty esters.
Odd. Not bad, though. Weird blend of flavors. Might have been better without a black IPA as a base. Very smooth.
