A mouth-watering cask conditioned ale based on a traditional Welsh recipe. The taste of this best bitter is due to the subtle addition of crystal and chocolate malts to the base Maris Otter pale ale malt. The initial well balanced taste gives way to a delicate smoked finish.

Clear rust; butterscotch + spice nose; thread of caramel, appley esters + a big hit of EKG hops, lingering sandalwood, smooth.

Nothing wrong here. Buttery, but that’s MO. More spice than I’d expect. Maybe a bit sweet, but I’d stick with it for a night.

Bottle. Dark amber. No head.
Sweet caramel malt aroma.
Toffee sweetness continues into the taste. Some stewed hops.
Low carbonation. Medium body.
A typical Welsh malty brew.

500ml Bottle drank on 5 Sep 2013. Poured into an 'Old Speckled Hen' badged vase shaped pint glass: looked good.
Deep brown body colour with a full off-white crown, the colour held even at the thin base of the vase, so good depth of colour.
The nose was all sweet malty molasses, as was the initial taste. Nutty, woody, notes of caramel and toffee, the hops were hiding well below the surface and just about preventing the brew becoming purely a malty mess. Hardly noticed the hops, even as the mouth dried no true bitterness or hop fell arrived.
I like sweet, malty beers and this fitted just right into my type of brew.

500ml bottle purchased from the International Beer Shop and poured into a 7oz glass.
Initally has a murky appearance upon pouring with an off-white head of foam that turns to film after a little while. When it settles it is relatively clear for a beer with an amber-brown colour.
Real Welsh aroma of sweet malt mixed with a touch of chocolate.
Sweet malt flavour is where this is at, bordering upon cloying at the finish and just the faintest touch of smoke at the end.
Nice body, decent feel to it, cloying is the only issue that creeps in late.
Overall a pretty true to label Welsh Ale, you know what you are getting with this one.
