Rich, dark and full of malt flavours, this black bitter owes its characteristics to the large amount of chocolate malt giving it a velvety smooth rich coffee finish. No aroma hops are added to this beer, instead seven types of grain are used to develop the flavour.

Aug. 2008: Cask at the GBBF 2008. Black colour, minimal head. Nice roasty aroma, notes of liquorice. "Dead" mouthfeel. Fairly bland flavour. Very moderate roasted notes and a very moderate fruitiness.

500ml bottle purchased from the International Beer Shop and poured into a 7oz glass.

Pours with a nice thick viscosity and has a black appearance with just the faintest tinge of red round the edges. Has a modest head of foam made up of small bubbles and with a tan appearance that falls away quickly.

The smell is of dark chocolate and just the faintest tinge of smoke early on. Very enticing.

The taste is smooth and chocolatey and transitions well into a nice finish that has a tinge of coffee to add some small bitterness to even things out. For the style, this is very good indeed!

The mouthfeel is great, nice and velvety, consistent, full bodied for a mild. Very impressive in this regard.

Overall a quality beer for the style. Dark milds aren't everyone's favourite style, but this is a very good example of the style. Impressive!
