A 500ml bottle with a BB of April 2014, so it's just out of date. ABV is stated as 4%. Acquired a while back from Beeritz. The label claims that it has a character of toffee and dark fruits.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. Bottle conditioned. A very dark reddish-brown hue that appears almost black in the glass. Produces a massive head of fluffy beige foam that resembles a meringue; this slowly subsides to a thick surface layer. Nice lacing. Aroma of mild roasted malt, faint burnt grain, subtle caramel, a twinge of dried fruit and dry, earthy yeast. OK but a bit dull.

Tastes of mild roasted malt with a dry finish. Notes of mild roasted grain, faint burnt notes, caramel, a hint of dried fruit, earthy yeast and stewed leaves. Highly attenuated, followed by a subtle, malty bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth, dry and tingly, with soft carbonation and a slightly insubstantial body. Somewhat astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of bitter stewed leaves, earthy yeast and roasted malt.

OK but nothing amazing. Looks great, with a massive head that stays the course. The aroma and flavour are rather lacklustre - dominated by earthy yeast alongside unenthusiastic dark malt. Body is alright but quite thin and dry. So-so; drinkable enough but nothing special. Perhaps the yeast developed too much in the bottle. Worth trying but no need to hunt it down.

500ml bottle bought from The Vineyard, Belfast...

Poured a deep dark ruby red... Creamy tan head poured fairly thickly then faded to thin layer.... no real lacing

Aroma - Nice strong chocolate maltiness, coffee notes, toasted bread, smoky / dusty notes, some dark fruits (plums, figs, some blackcurrents), faint liquorice notes, spicy, nice peppery hop bitterness...

Taste – Definite chocolate maltiness, toastiness, watery black coffee, nutty sweetness, milky notes, fruity (blackcurrents, plums), peppery, strong eartiness, nice hop bitterness, light smoky notes...

Feel - Pretty smooth.. Medium bodied. At 3.7 % an extremely quaffable ale...

Overall - A very good and nicely balanced mild... well worth a try...

On Gravity dispense from the cask at the Battersea Beer Festival, Feb '12.

Poured into a UK pint glass to a rich dark brown veering to black colour with nothing much in the way of a head!

Strong aroma for a mild, roasted malt and chocolate dominate here.

Also a very tasty mild, again the roasted malt dominates along with a rich (for a mild!) toffee/treacle/caramel spine to the beer and maybe some dried fruits lobbed in for good measure!

Thin body and a little watery as one would expect but overall a very good mild and whilst not my favourite style by any means, I have rated this beer fairly highly in comparison to others in the style.

Make mine a mild as the campaigb says, I'll embellish that to say make mine a Mallinsons!
