On tap at JoBoy's on 5/8/10.
Served in a pint glass, it appears a dark brown color with less than a finger of creamy tan head. Minimal retension and little to no lacing effect on the glass. Aroma is a mixture of roasted malt character with chocolate notes and a touch of some fruity esters. Taste is reminescent of the nose. Flavors of chocolate, burnt grain, coffee, slight dark fruit. Medium to light feel with a moderately light level of carbonation. Lingering taste of chocolate and a mild bitterness is left in the mouth with a faint touch of alcohol.
For this particular experience the owner described this style of beer to be an imperial milk/sweet stout. He made mention of a future release of an imperial stout that was still aging to fully develope it's flavor profile. With that being said, I'm sure all JoBoys future offerings will be generically listed under their respective categories of ipa/red/dark.

A - Muddy, earthy medium brown with reddish tones and a slim light tan head that reduced to a patchy film and a bit of spotty lace.
S - Roasted malt quality with a hint of coffee and milk chocolate. Pretty faint at first, although the aroma opened up a bit as it warmed up, releasing earthy hop notes and slight nutty tones.
T - Flavor is sweet up front with light chocolate and sweet lactic notes, then segues into a more bitter coffee character with earthy hop bitterness and a slight nuttiness. Finishes with moderate hop bitterness and slight astringency. The leafy hops really cling to the back of the tongue.
M - Medium body, although a tad thin perhaps for a stout, with moderate carbonation producing mild bristle on the tongue. Finishes with plenty of bitterness and a hint of residual sweetness on the palate.
D - Pretty hop forward stout that kept the alcohol to a minimum. Flavor was a little muddy overall, but this was a pretty solid first effort from this new Central PA brewpub.

The menu describes the dark side as a series of brown ales, porters, and stouts. I don't know that they'll have different names.
a: This was a very dark brown, not quite black. It was served to me with a short lived, thick fizzy head.
s: Mild chocolate, some leafy hops, and healthy dose of milky sweetness.
t: This was described to me as a sweet imperial stout. It was on the sweet side, I tasted roasty milk chocolate and toffee. There was a bit of a grassy hop bite. Not so sure about the imperial part.
m: Silky body and gently fizzy carbonation.
d: I'm pleasantly surprised. Very good beer and great BBQ. Nice combination and very welcome addition to the Lancaster county beer scene.

T-Fairly potent roasted malt flavour on the palate accompanied by an earthy hop bite and balancing toffee sweetness in the finish.
M-Medium-light bodied with good lingering flavour. Could use a touch more beefiness for my liking. Finishes with a hint of building oak dryness.
D-Good stuff, nice roastiness and a pleasant building dry finish. Again, as with the Manheim Red, nothing earth shattering, but a fairly flavourful and enjoyable brew that accompanies the food nicely.
