Review from notes taken during my last visit to the brewpub. I had this brew a couple of times and never bothered to take notes, figured I would this time around which was an experience quite like the last time. Served in a pint, this brew appears a dark brown color with faint clarity around the edges. A creamy tan head forms across the top and laces in patches along the glassware. The cap has decent retention with a creamy look to it.
The smell is dark and roasty with lots of fruity undertones suggesting raisins. Some citrus hops are included and some yeastiness suggests this is a young offering. Minor notes of chocolate and overall a decently rounded nose.
The taste is fruity with mild alcohol esters. Roasted grains provide a mild bitterness to balance out the fruity character. Lots of milk chocolate flavoring and minor notes of coffee. There is an ever present yeast characteristic that lasts into the finish. The aftertaste is like raisins and a touch of molasses.
This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. Decently drinkable but the fruity notes are a bit too bold for the style instead of having a more dry and roasty character. The alcohol is incorporated fairly well. For a porter this is easily approachable and I found it to be a very good pairing with the food offerings.

A brown porter for this take on the Darkside ales series.
A: The porter is a dark amber red color that looks brown when concentrated. A modest off-white head sits patiently atop the porter.
S: The nose is nicely roasted, with burnt toast, caramel and even some chocolate hanging around. The dark malt base is inviting.
T: More caramel, especially as compared to the nose. Those dark malts mix with chocolate and overroasted grains. The malts are comforting, as dark as the flavors are the body never gets too strong. Hoppiness is minimal, lending the ale more of an English vibe. The only dark beer on tap but a good start.
M: The mouthfeel is roasted but sweet, aided by the syrupy caramel that seems to hang around all JoBoy's darker offerings. This was my top choice until I tried the IPA.
D: A solid porter under 5%. Really?!? A little sweet at times, a good porter nonetheless. I'm really digging these low abv, solid-tasting beers.
