This black IPA is made with lots of Nugget hops and a clean American yeast. We use a form of dark malt for color that has little to no roasted character. It is clean, slightly sweet with low malt and lots of hop flavor.

This beer arrived with a thick cap of a finger of deep-tan head that evidenced excellent retention. Nose was slightly hoppy with cascade, but I also got a mild roastiness that they claimed the malt would not impart. The color was an inky dark brown, allowing no light to penetrate, but some color at the edges. Mouthfeel was medium and the flavor was more roasty than hoppy, which was still okay by me. Finish was still more roasty than bitter and it had a lingering yeasty flavor, like it needed more time in the FV.

On tap at JoBoy's on 1/15/11. This is considered a "Black IPA".
A - Cloudt, deviant-looking reddish brown liquid with a slim tan head that reduced to a wispy film but produced lots of stringy lacing around the glass.
S - Not a lot going on with the aroma, unfortunately. There is a mild roasted malt character, as well as faint chocolate and coffee notes. The hop presence is quite muted for the style, although there is a tinge of citrus zest in the mix.
T - Sweet chocolate/cocoa, molasses, caramel and toffee all gather together, giving the initial taste a malt-forward character. While a piney hop bite emerges in the backend, it is followed up with a more dry, medicinal herbal character that seems out of place here. Overall, the flavor is a bit roasty with a hint of chocolate and only a mild hop presence.
M - Medium bodied with a light syrupy texture, a bit watery perhaps, and moderate carbonation. Finish is dry with a roasted quality, mild medicinal bitterness and a hint of astringency on the palate.
D - Nice effort, but this one could use some more work. The brewer told me that this was a "work in progress" and they are still tweaking the recipe. I think they got the malt side down fairly well, but the hop profile needs improvement and clashes with the malt at times, especially during the finish. While this black IPA could definitely use more hops, perhaps the variety of hops needs to change here. I'm interested to try this again further down the road to see how it fares.
