Special Casks @ABC, tried last night, reviewed from notes. Pours out a clear orange-red with a two finger white head into a pint glass. The head has decent retention and is pretty creamy. Leaves a moderate coat of lacing and the head never fully dies down but leaves a pillow the whole time. Smell is fresh, fresh, fresh hops. The dry hopping surely made a difference in this beer. It is like sniffing a nice pack of homebrew hops right out of the bag. Not much else in the aroma though besides some pale malts. Hops smell fruity and piney and the dry hopping worked well. Taste is just like the smell. Hugely fresh hops on top of a decent malt backbone. The hops are almost too pellety/fresh tasting in this aspect of the beer. They are again earthy and fruity. The bitterness from the hops is lowish but good. A bit less in the dry hop and I think this one would be a classic. Up the malts a bit too. Mouthfeel needs a bit more body to support the hops. The carbonation is pretty low but good for cask ale. It leaves a coat of fresh hops on the tongue. A bit less of a watery feel would be great. Drinkability is good. The beer is feels very light and is definitely hugely sessionable. There are no off tastes to ruin it over time. A nice casked red ale with a great fresh hop flavor and aroma. Cool way to experience dry hopping.
