From a 16oz can, undated, purchased at the brewery. Served in a nonic.

Colour is opaque mahogany, with maybe a quarter-finger of creamy beige suds off a violent pour.

Smell is roasted malt and cherries, almonds, leather and dusty sofa.

Despite smelling (faintly) of dusty sofa, the taste is clean and bright, dead-neutral between bitter and sweet. A little baking chocolate, a little charred coffee grinds, but mostly just simple, uncomplicated, lightly roasted malt with a slightly fruity cherries-and-oranges, mildly dry, bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is smooth and clean, medium-light bodied and just barely adequately carbonated.

Overall, an easy drinking, better than decent, unpretentious stout.

"Dark, rich, hearty and smooth with a chocolatey flavor."

Coating lace from a lasting head throughout the tasting. Near black color--no light passes.

Lots of mocha and chocolate smells, but not sweet.

Rich body, slightly oily. Dark chocolate taste with no sweetness. Light background hop that provides some interest and balance. Dark cherry flavor in the background. This is not an extreme Imperial.

A - this stout arrives a midnight black with a thin wispy tan head, too dark to note carbonation

S - big roasted malts are the first element I notice, that is quickly followed by some dark chocolate characteristics

T - bitter cocoa powder flavors are up first, followed by some toasted malts, and a new head emerges, a faint background vanilla

M&D - smooth, crisp and quenching, a fine RIS with plenty of flavor without being overcomplicated, would love to see them age some of this in some barrels

My homie Jeff brought over this growler the other night. Thanks!

Poured nicely out of the growler, nearly black. Nice tan foam. Poor retention and inconsistent lacing.

Smells of some boiled vegetables attempting to be hidden by roasted malts. Just not enough stout characteristics here to cover what is clearly an off flavor. Uggh, only gets worse as it warms. Ehh the flavor is the same, you get some roast and chocolate as it warms but really the off flavors are hurting this beer drastically. It has some of what people would call that "homebrew" flavor, boiled vegetables, DMS, just overall nasty. Mouthfeel is pretty ok, I'll give it a little benefit of the doubt since it's coming out of a growler. I really don't want to drink this at all (and we each only drank about half a pint of it before pouring the rest out), but I suppose the alcohol is well integrated for this 6.5% 'imperial' stout.

Thanks to aerojones2 for the growler.

The beer pours into a pint glass with a black color and a dark brown head with excellent retention.

Aroma has some slight fruit, some coffee, and a bit of milk, but all in low intensity. There is some unpleasant, vegggie type DMS character going in the nose. One would think a hefty stout could have enough aromatics to cover the flaws up.

A full, creamy mouthfeel with moderate carbonation is the highlight of this beer. The flavor has some milky, coffee, and chocolate flavors and some fruit notes in a dry finish. DMS character is back from the nose, as well as a grainy flavor that adds a somewhat sour and tannic finish. I have a feeling that this beer is inconsistent. There were some good flavors coming through behind the flaws, so perhaps I had an off batch. This was hard to finish, so I didn't.

Pours pitch black with a tan one finger head that retains decently anf leaves medium lacing. Smells and tastes of roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, and hoppy bitterness. Mouthfeel is a bit thin for the style and a bit overcarbonated for me also, no alcohol present either. Drinkability is good, great taste, low price, no bad off flavors, no alcohol. Will buy this one as long as I live in the wmass area.

Served in a pint glass at the brewpub.

Pours a jet black color with a one finger tan head with good retention and thick lacing down the glass. Aromas of coffee, chocolate, roasted malts, light smoke. Roasted malt flavors mix with an espresso bitterness with a smooth chocolate finish. Medium body, medium carbonation, a little too thin. This is a good stout but not very complex, a little boring for a Russian Imperial Stout compared to what else is out there.
