375 mL bottle. Black with no bubbles. Smells of earthy coffee, oak, and light bourbon. Tastes of oak and earthy, mushroomy coffee. Warming and boozy. Low carbonation, if any at all. Heavy. Slow to drink because of the alcohol and deep, earthy tones. It's not my kind of stout, but it's an interesting profile. Not what I expected from a Genealogy variant.

Near black body with nary a head.

Coffee, malt, roast…Akin to a Danish imperial stout.

Low carbonation and smooth feel.

Solid.

 

 

Big, bold, yet balanced. The cocoa and coffee add a nice mild harshness and bitterness to the smooth, chocolatey base with a nice warming oaky presence. Delicious.

A jet black with a dark brown head with excellent retention and little lacing, this looks great. The nose is a stunning expression of coffee and cacao nibs. Bright roasted coffee notes, with freeze dried berries, a noticeable barrel note with vanilla, bourbon and a little heat, deep cacao notes with dark chocolate, all layered on top of an impeccable base stout. I gather this is a wheat stout, and there is a hefty grain bill here. Bitter roasted malt, dark fruit with plum and raisin, a little brown sugar, a little burnt sugar. There's also a hint of rum present. Booze is clearly present, lending a pleasant warmth to the nose, along with a nice, toasted oak character.

The palate opens lush and creamy , soft and boozy with a warming heat that brings forth flavors of vanilla, a little coconut. It does taste and feel a little hotter than 10%. A remarkably well integrated flavor palette is clear, though. The fruity flavors of the coffee with hint of floral notes blends harmoniously with the dark chocolate and toasted cacao nibs. These flavors segue into notes of plum, cocoa, dark fruit, a little fudge and charred oak bitterness . The mouthfeel is ridiculous on this beer. Creamy and appropriately and tastefully so, with soft carbonation ( I was worried given how vigorous of a pop I got when I opened it). Booze is well integrated into the palate, this is hedonic yet refined. The extensive time in the barrels lends what I can only call Grace to the palate, a soft, shimmering depth. Fantastic stuff, it's a shame this is so hard to get and as pricey as it is, but this comes with highest recommendations

The beer pours a deep jet black color, thick and viscous with a finger of khaki head that has modest retention and a nice layer of film with excellent lacing. The aroma is wonderful, bursting with rich chocolate, dark and bittersweet with a nice fudge quality that is complimented by a mild roast, smooth coffee, toasted oak, hearty grains, a touch of bourbon with light vanilla and a great lingering caramel character. The flavors are excellent, continuing the rush of chocolate with a big fudge brownie flavor, bitter dark chocolates, rich coffee, soft roast that brings out a nice toasted dark grain flavor along with charred oak, vanilla, mild bourbon and a great caramel finish. The mouthfeel is good, thick, creamy with a nice medium heavy body that is smooth and finishes warmly but easily.

Verdict: An excellent stout from Hill Farmstead. The chocolate character is just wonderful and the coffee adds a nice richness without being too acidic or overdone that allows for layers of barrel, vanilla, grain and caramel to flourish.

Black oily appearance with a tan sparse fast receding head leaving a delicate tan surface mist, oily fingers on the glass, no lacing. Soft bitter bourbon notes, bitter but mild coffee bites, and dove dark chocolate. Nose is mostly bourbon, then coffee, then chocolate, all three present. Smooth thick body and mouthfeel. Beautiful!

 

 

 

Black in color and impenetrable to light. There’s a quarter inch of brown around the rim and covering the majority of the top. Moderate, soapy lacing. There’s a lot of chocolate and a bit of oily, pungent, dark roasted coffee in the nose. I’m tasting a wallop of milk chocolate with some faint dark roasted coffee undertones. The mouth is silky smooth and viscous. This is the perfect after dinner beer in a glass.

This one pours a very dark black color, with a small head, and not much lacing.

This smells like roasty and bright coffee, dried raisin, hazelnut creamer, milk chocolate fudge, oak spice, bourbon, and dark chocolate.

This is basically as good as it gets for coffee beer - the coffee has so much fruitiness and nuttiness. The addition of the nibs gives you a melted dark chocolate sort of thing. There's also milk hot chocolate, with some oak spice, and just a hint of bourbon. It all melds well extremely well.

This is silky, and velvety, with a creamy and rich body, but not something that's incredibly thick. There's no booze here at all.

There was almost no chance of failure here. The coffee used is obviously extremely high quality. I don't always love beers that have chocolate added, but it works quite well here.
