Abner (1867-1953) is our great grandfather; Hill Farmstead Brewery rests upon the land that was once home to him and his fourteen children. In his honor, this Double IPA is dutifully crafted from American malted barley, a plethora of American hops, our ale yeast and water from Abner’s well. It is unfiltered, naturally carbonated, and double dry hopped. Aromatic and flowery, bursting with notes of citrus and pine, this is the ale that I dream to have shared with Abner.

170 Theoretical IBU

Pale and Caramel Malt; Dextrose; Centennial, Chinook, Columbus, Simcoe, and Warrior hops; Ale Yeast, and our Well Water.

Pours a fizzy clear marmalade orange colour.

Smell is west coast IPA, grapefruit, tropical, piney.

Taste is the same, dry and certainly bitter.

Feel is smooth, and easy to drink.
Well made I'm sure, but not that much my style of beer.

It pours kind of an orange-ish hue more than golden. Tropical fruit on the nose. This is like bitter pineapples with a bit of booziness on the backend.

It arrived in a clear pint glass after being drawn from a tap. There's not much of an off-white head, but that's the way we pour draft beers in Philadelphia. The color is richly orange-amber, hazy, but bright. A prediction of a balanced flavor of malt and complex hops comes from the nose. It wasn't too far off. The taste runs a little sweeter and less hoppy than expected and now appreciated. There's some bite from the citrus/pine hopping, but almost as much from the alcohol, which doubtlessly adds to the sweetness. The finish is clean and runs somewhat bitterly, improving things. The body is light, but good enough. Some stratified glass lacing adds to the visual. Flawed by a little extra necessary sweetness, this is still a very good HIIPA.

Had a single, twelve-ounce draft at Olde Magoun's Saloon in Somerville, Massachusetts for about nine dollars. My twenty fourth brew reviewed from these guys. Very good, tasted a bit undercarbinated.

Pours a very hazy, golden color with a nice white head that leaves sleckliings of lacing. Nose is sort of peach hints with pine. Taste is piney. Superb bitterness that grabs the throat.

Appearance is hazy (go figure) golden orange with a very slight head. That is curious.
The taste is citrus and bread and vanilla and it all seems to work together very well.
The feel is excellent, smooth yet not silky, just a joy to quaff.
OA, if these were available around here I would definitely be getting them occasionally.

Marching down the history of Hill Farmstead, the brewers must have particularly fond memories or stories about Abner, because the beer made in his namesake is modern, magical and marvelous.

Caught somewhere between hazy ale and standard American IPA, Abner builds a creamy tall head and bright bouquet of branch-ripe citrus, tropical nuances and a creamy scent of vanilla. As its flavors coat the tongue with creamy sweetness, dry cereal, bready sweetness, honey and agave set the stage for a hoppy middle palate. Tangerine, pink grapefruit, lemon bridge into more tropical flavors of passionfruit, mango and papaya all wrapped in a cocoon of honeydew before bowing to a smoothly bitter finish of verbena, spruce, peppery grasses, hemp and tea leaf.

Medium bodied, creamy and finishing on the sharper side of malty-dry, the more bitter beer truly exhibits what's best about American IPA that borrows from more hazier trends.

I was in Greensboro and made the pilgrimage.

Pours a hazy dark orange with a 1F head and a lot of lacing.

Smells of slightly dank piney and floral hops and citrus.

Tastes of resinous hops, tart grapefruit and a bit of orange. I think I detect tangy wheat too but the label says not. It has a lightly bitter finish.

Medium light body with light pickily carbonation. Crisp dry mouthfeel.

This a well crafted , moderately bitter NEIPA. Bit of an acquired taste but all good for me.
