Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay “Self-Reliance” inspires and compels our persistent reflection, examination, and refinement. From our ongoing pursuit of unique and personally selected hops to our steady quest after refinement and the individualized expression of elegance in all of our beers, Emerson’s urging to “insist on yourself; never imitate” provides motivation towards greater self-exploration, self-expression, and self-realization.
Our Self-Reliance series of Farmstead® single-hop India pale ales allows us to explore how our Farmstead® ale yeast and various hops express themselves in unison. This novel variation of our Farmstead® single-hop India pale ales was brewed in August 2023, conditioned in Orange Bitters barrels for two months, and dry-hopped with hand-selected Citra® from Washington’s Yakima Valley.

Murky orange, fluffy white head, good retention, little to no lacing. Malty, biscuit, citrus, orange marmalade, well balance tart and sweetness. Medium body, creamy carbonation. Very good!

Bottle. 2023 hop harvest.
White head with lace. Golden mango color.
This is amazing. The barrels are awesome. Never had an orange bitters barrel aged beers. A lot of citrus and orange peel. Very refreshing. Not tart or acidic. Wheat and saison flavors. Not overly spiced. Maybe some lime. Floral and earthy. Touch of bitterness.
Outstanding.

This one pours a slightly hazy golden orange color, with a small head, and lots of lacing.
This has a fascinatingly herbal, funky, and fruity nose on it. It’s almost woody, with orange tangerine, lemon, lime, and vanilla
I have always really loved this series, and this is a fantastic and wholly unique entry to it. Self Reliance Citra on its own was great, with that great funky lemon and orange citrusy hop and funk vibe. However, the use of orange bitters barrels is an inspired move, giving an earthy vanilla, spicy and herbal note that just works so well with the beer. It also seems to amplify the orange vibes, I would assume.
This is lighter bodied, clean, crisp, and super drinkable.
I really enjoyed this one and really appreciated the creativity here.
