Rich copper color, slightly on the darker end of the spectrum for style. Faint haze. Head is thin and doesn't last too long, leaving a soapy ring. The smell has an herbal, tea-like hop quality, with faint hints of citrus. Not too potent an aroma really, somewhat clean. There is also touch of caramel suggesting some malty strength, but otherwise the alcohol is not very discernible in the nose.
The taste is kind of lacking up front, then a caramel sweetness builds toward the end with sharp, fruity, orange-tinged hop flavor. Light pine freshness. Moderately bitter in the finish, there is also a touch of astringency as well. The carbonation is very sharp, prickly in fact, a little too much perhaps. Medium body.
Overall this IPA is pretty average, and considering the quality and selection of IPA's these days you could argue it's below average. That said, it's not a bad beer, just not exciting or well-rounded. I think it's a bit strong for style, with a richer maltiness than I'd prefer. At 8% ABV it's really more of a Double IPA. If the idea is to showcase the Iowa hop harvest, then display the hops against a lighter grain/malt base and keep it closer to 6% ABV. Furthermore, Cascade and Centennials are great, but that combination has been done so often that it's going to take a real special quality to make it memorable. I hope Madhouse will keep working at it.
