2013 vintage courtesy of barleywinefiend. The cap popped off the bottle with a loud pfft and visible CO2 vapor strongly blowing out of the edges of the cap. As foreshadowed, the liquid poured out with a a huge foamy head that took up half of the 24 ounce brandy snifter into which it was being poured. Had to wait for the foam to subside. Note that I am scoring the look of this beer as closely as I can to a bottle that is not overcarbonated. Dark brown and opaque, nearly black with a light brown head that lingers long. Low aroma of chalky dark malt, some caramel and roast. Flavor is similar to the aroma, with roast dominating. A bit too roasty for me, with some bitter burnt character. This one falls apart on mouthfeel, and I can't adjust the score for that. Way too carbonated, every sip brings a tingle to the tongue as the carbonation bubbles sizzle on the tastebuds. Every swallow elicits a burp of all the gas ingested. Bubbly mouthfeel detracts from the flavor as the bubbles fight the flavor compounds on the palette. Despite the overcarbonation, the flavor is a bit one-dimensional for me. Would like less aggressive roast bitterness, and more complexity.
