After sampling a bottle of Shipwreck at the brewery, I sat down to a draught pint at Black Diamond Pizza and Deli where Foothills maintains its only reliable draught account. The keg was fresh at the Deli though it apparently suffered from some sort of CO2 leak causing the beer to foam uncontrollably. After some delay, the house served me a pint gratis. Not only was I pleased with the freebie, but the dissipated carbonation gave the beer's body a pleasant informality much like a cask-conditioned pour.
Shipwreck is unfiltered, but is mostly clear auburn and retains a tall head resembling an ice-cream cone. The Herculean head is aided by an addition of wheat as well as Magnum, Warrior, and Northern Brewer hops. Shipwreck's defining feature is its green-herbal flavor, especially in the finish where it conspires with firm bittering and comes across as somewhat grassy.
A refreshing ale though a bit lacking in aroma for an IPA.
