12 ounce bottle into a snifter. Bottled 11/18/19, had 11/30/20.
Pours dark brown and mostly opaque, with a half inch foamy head and a decent amount of foamy lacing. Aromas of rye whiskey, chocolate, coffee, maple, some malt, maybe a hint of bacon. Flavors of chocolate, coffee, maple, some rye whiskey- more as it warms, some vanilla, oak, malt and again, maybe a hint of bacon in the aftertaste. Smooth, a solid full body, well carbonated.
Have had the usual version a number of times, although not recently, and it’s still not easy to compare, but I found this to be a bit different. This had big chocolate notes that I don’t remember- not a negative, but the coffee isn’t as strong and the bacon, which shows pretty well in the usual, is pretty much non existent. The barrel influence may be a stronger in the flavor here. All that said, this is still delicious, but not as good as the annual version. Very enjoyable.

I'm not typically a fan of this concept, nor of maple, but this is probably the best version of it I've had. The cacao nibs and maple oddly combine for somewhat of a chocolate banana impression, without presenting a very strong maple flavor in itself. Modest bacon notes, and the coffee wields an earthy nuttiness. Well balanced, good rye spice and barrel character, but a thinner body and mouthfeel than expected.

I love rye hipster, had the orignal multiple batches now, including an aged one side by side with this one, and these barrels really do make this a different beer. The barrel presence is much more defined, huge wood, rye is not as sharp but more rustic, and booze translates through the finish more. The emphases on the stout are changed as a result: bacon and a nutty element to the coffee now lead, with rye, dark chocolate and maple being extra smoky support. Not as cohesive in my opinion, but certainly sharper and warmer. Smell is still a dream to behold and look still has great depth with an inviting allure. A more premium barrel experience but the underlying stout is not a balanced as a result.

12oz bottle poured into a snifter. Packaging date of 11/18/19 printed on the side of the label. Coffee, maple, bacon - what more could you ask for. Rye whiskey barrels add another layer of complexity. Great beer!

Bottled 11/18/19; drank 12/26/19 @ the Yarchives.
Black appearance.
An even pour yielded a nice tan head; strong, frothy lace.
Banana, milk chocolate, pecan, medium roast coffee bean & faint maple notes in the nose.
Creamy, medium thick mouthfeel.
Creamy pecan, milk chocolate, medium roast coffee bean & faint maple flavors up front; mild booze heat emerged as this warmed.
The pecan actually added something nice here; a hint too boozy, but a nice variation on a very good beer.
