In 2017, Odd Side Rye Hipster Brunch Stout won silver at the Great American Beer Festival. In 2019, it took gold. We’re huge fans of this unique stout and we partnered with Odd Side to bring you this decadent new riff. The beer began as Rye Hipster Brunch Stout, but after a year of rest in rye whiskey barrels, it was transferred into Buffalo Trace bourbon barrels that were hand selected by our Whiskey Hotline team. Six months later, it was out of the barrels and into the cans. Get ready to taste the difference a barrel can make. This beauty was well worth the wait.

Had this on tap. The description doesn't lead me to believe this is I'd like but damned if this doesn't come together extremely well. Sweet toffee, maple, and chocolate up front with coffee joining in next. The finish adds plenty of brown liquor and a sharp, smokey bite. Damn good stuff.

I adore the original, so was very excited about this DBA version, and I thought it came through nicely, though less complex due to barrel dominance. Medium black pour with brown highlightings and tan cap. Coffee, chocolate, earth, and big rye whiskey nose. Taste adds more wonderful rye, light savory bacon, leather, maple in a soft way, and char, very complex, especially as it warms. Feel is not as barrel forward as the taste, rye and earth most affective, then oak, good depth of texture while staying dark in complexion

Sitting before me is an obsidian globe, sheared at the top and oozing dark flan coloured clotting bubbles.
Nose is sweet up front, and creamy. Booze is present, and the maple and bacon come together to remind me of the maple butter my MIL sent us. Very creamy in that sense, and sweet as well. Coffee comes in later as like cold diner coffee, but still sticky treacly sweet.
A warm rush greets me as I sip, and the alcohol warms and kicks a touch without burning. The coffee lends a bitterness, and the maple is an enveloping warm comfortable sweetness that thankfully isn't as cloying as it got on the nose. Chocolate runs through the middle of it, and it all comes together in a warm comfortable glow like sitting in a comfortable chair by the fire.
Velvety smoothe, though only medium bodied, ultimately. While it isn't harshly hot, it does drink almost even a little bigger than its 11.8%.
This is another delicious take on the Hipster Brunch from Odd Side, and I've enjoyed every version I've tried quite a bit.
Thanks @FBarber for sending this my direction!

12oz can, dated 11.30.2020, poured into a stemless wine glass.
The beer pours a nice jet black color, almost cola brown as it comes from the can with a fizzy tan head, maybe a finger tall that has little retention and yields nice swatches of soapy lacing. The aroma is nice, rich coffee, dark chocolate, sweet maple all play nicely and burst out of the glass while a more subtle and layered barrel character emerges as it warms, hot spirit, spice, charred oak, toffee and vanilla with a bit of booziness that lingers. The flavors are good, rich maple and dark chocolate, heavy grains, charred wood, barrel heat, a pinch of salinity helps bring a more acidic coffee expression though it certainly dabbles in the richness of this beer, but helps bring some new dimensions to avoid an overly rich and heavy experience. There is a nice spice and rye forward barrel character that follows through with a more mellow and toffee forward bourbon profile which offers up some vanilla and toasted coconut with a lingering spirit heat. The mouthfeel is fine, it's a bit thinner than I'd prefer though it certainly has enough body to deliver the big flavors and it coats well, but there is more carbonation than you might expect for an 11% BA stout. The finish is warm and mildly dry.
Verdict: A very nice barrel aged stout from Odd Side and Binny's. The barrel character on this one is fantastic and the adjuncts are well balanced and presented. There is such a nice depth and balance to this beer, I just wish it has a more luscious and silky texture.

I love Odd Side Ales. Their barrel aged beers are odd and delicious. Who adds bacon to beer? They do, and it works.
