Modeled after the most traditional of traditional Gose, Odd Side Ales builds a German-styled sour wheat ale the right way. Decorated with both coriander and sea salt and their Gose departs from the common fruity, creamy and slushie-type sour ales and brings us a genuine taste of history.
Pale gold and laced with the common wheaten cloudiness of wheat beer, Crushies builds a loose, spritzy and foamy froth before teasing the nose with a twang of acidity along with a fruity perfume of cider, citrus and berry with an earthiness of fresh dough. Creamy with malts but not necessarily sweet, a starchy and creamy upstart is redolent with sourdough, breadiness and somewhat stale.
As the creamy malts wash the middle palate, the cream of wheat character holds firm and acts as a liaison between the fruity impressions of apple, lemon, pear and orange from natural acidity and the rounded salinity and coriander spice that plays out in a bright fullness late in taste. Low in bitterness, a taste of wheat germ and damp burlap adds a comp lex charm to go along with the stale aspects of bread crust and honey late in taste.
Medium bodied and only medium on sourness, these are all the hallmarks of a true Gose, a style that's systematically misunderstood among many beer communities . Crushies finishes crisp, concise and still plump with a brief afterglow of burlap and sourdough for a session that's indeed crushable.
