decent kolsch here, not as crisp and refreshing as the best examples of the style, but a subtly ambitious brew for these guys and rather well executed. a little mid palate sweetness, a definite german character to the grain profile, and a briskness and liveliness to it that are quite appealing, although more a warm weather beer than a cold one for me, it cut through the richness of the mac and cheese i had for dinner in here, a good pairing for foods like that. blonde but not super light, clearish but not mirror glazed, and holding almost an inch of fizzy white head for awhile. nose and taste have lightly herbal noble hoppiness, with slight straw and grass and very reserved bitterness but enough for this to be fast finishing. the grain is earthy, simple, fresh, and properly mashed, i like the dry cereal character up front but also that little wrinkle of mid palate sweetness the style allows for, relatively dynamic for also being quite basic. carbonation is nice and high which helps, the yeast is maybe not super expressive but it translates a little old worldy and it works with the rest of the recipe. a little more than a mindless pounder here, but real easy drinking. nice repreive from all the heavy ipa types i drank in portland all weekend...
