I had this excellent, well-rounded, characterful beer on tap at the La Jolla Public House.
Copper amber, it had a fairly creamy medium off-white head slowly shrinking to a rich foamy ring, wisps, and some good lace.
Aroma was yeasty, musty grapes, some grapefruit and orange, some deep breadiness. It was very good but not outstanding.
Taste was wonderful, full-bodied but not heavy, well-rounded and well-balanced, with the elements firm and bright but nicely integrated, restrained, and not intense. It had bittersweet grapefruit that was more noticeable on the first sip but soon melded into the rest nicely, raisiny orange, great slightly caramelly rich yeasty bread and raisininess holding it all together, nice herbal spiciness, some juicy yeastiness. Feel was solid, firm, creamy but lively, not oily, neither thin nor heavy. This was a very nice surprise.

On tap at Mother Earth.
A: Burnished gold with a frothy white head that exhibits good retention and leaves sheets of lace on the glass.
S: Deep orange flesh note accompanied by tangerine and grapefruit. Little rind character, mostly sweet flesh. Really nice fruit profile. Rye is unmistakable, though it's not too strong. Malt provides some balance, but I can't pick out any distinct characteristics it imparts, perhaps a little bread. Excellent nose.
T: Orange and grapefruit flesh mingle with lesser notes of pith and rind. Rye suffuses the flavor and imparts a dash of spiciness. Alcohol is well masked. The beer gives the impression of balance but again, there isn't a strong malt flavor apart from the rye. Finish is dry and fruity with a dash of spiciness. The beer is moderately bitter throughout. The flavor is more of a 4.25. Very nice.
M: Upper light to lower medium in body with moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry and sticky.
Overall: A nice rye IPA. Recommended.
