Churchill's Pub & Grille
San Marcos, CA

Dark for a typical San Diego DIPA--closer to a dark amber or copper in color than a gold or an orange. Clear. Thin, light khaki colored head. Ribbons of lace left down the glass.

Malty aroma of biscuit and caramel sweetness. Some citrus and floral notes and a bit of an alcohol note. In the world of generalities, this immediately reminds me more of an East Coast DIPA than a West Coast one.

Moderate to full bitterness, caramel sweetness and biscuit malt, floral and some citrus hop components, and an alcohol harshness. Some grapefruit skin and flesh character emerge as the beer warms. Drinkable.

Medium to near-full bodied for the style. Moderate-high carbonation. Some alcohol noticeably present.

Decent, but there are a handful of better hoppy options available without looking too hard.

On Tap at Churchill’s Pub – San Marcos
6oz pour – 03/16/13

A: Light burnished copper amber body with some decent clarity and a thin whisp of off white foam. Leaves ribbons and a few scattered dots down the glass. Looks within the appropriate SRM range for the style according to my calculations uh-glavin.

S: Big malty nose with some biscuit and toffee-like sweetness. There is a light dusting of citrus and florals but it is rather dissapointing for another toted Citra DIPA. Very clean yeast profile and a touch boozy with that 8.8% presenting itself. Pretty commonplace aroma.

T: Flavors display a more English style pale malt with accentuated bready biscuit and caramel toffee sweetness coming through. Citra hops are pretty light in the loafers and are a bit of a let down here. Does provide some grapefruit zest and florals with a touch of that hop spice but it is pretty tame. There is a nice moderately high bitterness to the overall beer giving some nice punch and alchol is coming through but not in a terribly boozy way. Pretty well balanced and smooth drinking actually but just coming up a bit plain for me.

M: Smooth creamy consistency with a moderately heavy body and a light drying towards the finish. Overall feel is more on the wetter side and there is some slight alcohol warming with a bit of sappy hop pucker lingering about.

D: This was not bad but of all the great beers on tap for Chrurchill’s 10th Anniversary this one came up a bit lame. Says from the website that this DIPA was bittered with a massive charge of CTZ hops and then Dry hopped only with Citra. I think the malts selected become a bit obtrusive and it just needed more Citra coming through in flavor and aroma. I may need to revisit this one at another time.

On tap for Churchill's Renaissance 2013 at Churchill's Pub & Grille in San Marcos, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, and citrus zest. Taste is much the same with a citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with some tasty citrus flavors.
