Corten gets its name from the steel that was used to build the New River Gorge Bridge. This dark amber English-inspired ale is aged in rye whiskey barrels from West Virginia distillery Smooth Ambler Spirits. Punchy, caramelized malt along with tea and tobacco notes from the hops are complimented by the dryness of the rye whiskey to create a smooth, balanced ale. Cheers!

Corten looks very much like the rusted steel it is named after, although it may be slightly more yellow. It is muddy, with a thin, brief, rocky almond head that leaves spotty lace on a PBGC small "Sparkles" mug.
The aroma is similar to sweet whiskey with oak, and possibly even a light sensation of vermouth. Toffee follows with lots of sweet malt and a touch of honeysickle. This beer has a lot going on, especially when warmth draws out the light touch of peat.
The sweet/bitter balance is quite surprising, given how sweet the aroma is. It does start off sweet, though that evens out and gives way to light bitterness. The progression is pronounced in each sip. Whiskey and vermouth carry forward with peat and toffee following. Oak is revealed as it warms, as are sweet cherries. The finish is mild and lingering with a hint of smokiness that mellows as it warms.
A medium body and silky texture. Alcohol and carbonation are both below expectations, though certainly playing starring roles. The finish starts dry before yielding. This one is very smooth, especially as it warms.
Corten is a pleasant sipping beer. I imagine it would be perfect during a quiet, cold night next to a fire under the stars. I enjoyed it while reading on a cold, Sunday afternoon.

375ml bottle poured into a snifter
A- pours an amber-brown in color with a one-finger creamy off white head that has great retention and leaves some lacing behind
S- plenty of barrel on the nose with peppery rye poking through, along with spicy oak. Toffee and caramel malty notes, along with herbal black tea, leather and some floral notes to close it out
T- as expected, the barrel takes center stage on this one. Bold spicy and peppery rye adds a dryness that is immediately noticed. Mid-palate brings out some sweet malty notes of caramel and fig. The finish gives more rye barrel, adding a peppery oak note that compliments a subtle herbal hop note on the linger
M- medium body with moderate carbonation leads to a foamy mouthfeel that turns into a creamy, slightly warming finish
O- rye whiskey fans will enjoy this one as it is very barrel forward from a superb rye barrel
