Barrel Aged Tumble Home (Bottled 14 Dec. 2017) was reviewed side-by-side with Tumble Home (Bottled 20 May 2018).
This beer is lightly foggy like amber honey (SRM 7-9) and slightly darker than the base beer. A thin almond head is formed from fine bubbles and is slightly thicker than the base beer. Spotty lace and a thin viscus film form on the goblet glass with no legs.
The aroma has a strong booziness, with a ton of oak tannins, unlike the base beer. Whisky builds with warmth while light solvent notes build to become pronounced.
Booziness seems to be a theme, as are the strong harsh oak tannins. Bitterness is also harsh. The flavors tend to be lost in the harshness. The base beer has these qualities, though far less pronounced. The finish is long and unpleasant. Warmth detracts further.
A medium body with a smooth nylon texture. Alcohol, while expected and with only medium heat, is far more prevalent than desired. Fine carbonation seems to be an after thought.
As with the base beer, BA Tumble Home may have been negatively impacted by age. Oxidation is likely a factor. Regardless, one should expect these beers to hold-up for three years. This review was conducted on a cold late Autumn afternoon.

Look - Pours a beautiful deep ruby color with a thin, off white head that disappears almost immediately.
Smell - Sweet and boozy. That's the best way to describe the smell. Just sweet and boozy.
Taste - First taste seems too much barrel for the beer. The second taste pushes the barrel to the background and then it's more on the nose than on the palate. Hops are a supporting role and not the main focus. This tastes as sweet as it smells but the sweetness is short of being overpowering. The booze is not terribly noticeable but there is just enough to add another layer of complexity.
Feel - Not thick at all for such a boozy beer.
Overall - This is a big, bold, kick you in the ass beer that is surprisingly easy to drink despite the 11.8%. Now that WV has upped the max a.b.v. to 15%, I wonder if the brewery will make an even stronger version.
