New Jersey Beer Co. "LBIPA"
16 fl. oz. can coded "eNJoy by AUGUST 2020 Open Other End". Sampled on May 15, 2020
$2.49 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ
Notes via stream of consciousness: Upon opening the beer immediately foamed out the top of the can, but it doesn't seem to be over carbonated. Odd. It's a hazy amber with some golden highlights beneath a now fairly short head of white foam. I'm waiting to try it now to see what happens with the head but it seems to be holding OK. The aroma is malty with some caramel and biscuity notes, and it's fairly floral. There's a little bit of some apple-like yeasty fruitiness in there as well, and a bit of melon that I'm guessing is coming from hops - but then again might be coming from a hot fermentation. On to the taste... ahhh, I'm not liking that... What is that? It has a harshness to it that I'm guessing is coming from their water. The only other time I've knowingly experienced this (or a similar thing if this is something different) was in a beer made with rusty water after the municipality cleaned all of their fire hydrant lines. It's not horrific but I'm not fond of it, and who knows what it really is. Moving on, there's a lot more fruitiness than I found in the aroma and I'm getting some additional tropical notes (apricot, pineapple). There's a lot of earthiness to it, and it has an almost spent hop flavor to it. It's not overly bitter but whatever's going on makes it come across as a little acrid. Very odd. It finishes dry with a bitter twang and some residual earthiness, leafiness, and melon lingering. It's astringent which doesn't help, and the carbonation is a bit biting even though it has some very nice tiny bubbles to it. It's odd because it doesn't really seem over carbonated; perhaps whatever else is going on with it is accentuating the C02 bite. Looking back the head held up fairly well, and the lacing is better than average. I'm hoping that this is just an off-batch and I'll try to remember to pick up another can later on in the year to re-review. I'm not going to drink the rest of this.
