Served on-tap at Little Town NJ in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a mostly clear medium to dark amber in color with light amounts of visible carbonation and some reddish brown highlights. The beer has a half finger tall beige head that reduces to a medium sized patch of very thin film and a medium thick ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of carbonation are observed.

S: Moderate flavors of rich sweet malts with some notes of toffee along with some light hints of fruity yeast. Light hints of spicy hops.

T: Upfront there are some moderate flavors of sweet malts with some notes of toffee and caramel. Underneath that there are some light notes of spicy hops and some fruity yeasts (white grape and pear) that contribute to the overall sweetness. Minimal amounts of bitterness in the finish which fades quickly.

M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Just a touch of alcohol warming in the finish.

O: I found this to be a little more enjoyable than some of the other beers of this style that I have found reproduced in the US - the beer was much easier to drink that others.

Pours deep dark amber color with a small medium khaki colored foamy head and recedes at an average pace to leave some decent lacing.

Aromas begin unlike I expected for a Scotch ale. I am getting a lot of Belgian yeasty notes of clove, strong fruity esters and slight bits of alcohol. As it warms I get some pale malt sweetness and slight roast and molasses as well.

The tastes follow the nose but in reverse. Up front are the grainy and lightly roasted malts but the finish is all fruity esters and clove. Alcohol emerges as well along with minor amounts of earthy bitterness and a bit of an odd twang.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation. Finish is a bit brash and boozy with odd spiciness that would be more acceptable in a Belgian ale than a Scottish ale.

Overall to be honest this tastes like a poorly made homebrew that was fermented at too high of a temperature. The phenolics, esters and spicy clove are just out of place here and this lacks a solid Scottish toasted brown bready malt base. While I love to drink local, this brewery just hasn't impressed me enough to revisit any of their offerings.

Not a bad attempt at a wee heavy but feels like it needs some tweaking and refining. Appearance is good; nearly clear mahogany body, nice cream colored head with average retention; patchy lacing. Nose is pretty nice too, richly malty, faint spicy esters underneath, sweet toffee, dark fruit, trace booziness.

The flavor mirrors the nose pretty closely but could be more vivid. There’s good malt character here, some sweetness, again, toffee and caramel, molasses, raisins and figs, noticeable alcohol, a touch of spices (clove, mostly). Just a hint of peat. But it’s blander than I’d like and lacks heft. The mouthfeel is really where this beer faltered for me; the body was way too thin and light, carbonation was a bit rough and prickly, and there was little in the way of the smoothness or creaminess that one would expect from the better examples of this style.

Here’s hoping these guys pick it up a bit. They’re right in my backyard and I will definitely be following their progress. Unfortunately they don’t seem to have achieved a very professional level of brewing yet and their beers have been a bit uneven in my experience so far. Don’t mean to slam anyone but would love to see them take it to the next level.
