A 1 pint 0.9 fl. oz. bottle, 2011 vintage. Poured into a snifter glass.

Appearance: Dark dark brown to black in colour with a half finger brown head that stuck around for a bit while leaving some spotty lacing.

Aroma: Roasty, dark fruit, prunes, raisin, smoke. Maybe just call it smoked prunes.

Taste: Roasty, moderately sour, prunes, raisin, smoked dark fruit, oak, chocolate, cocoa.

Mouthfeel: Full bodied with soft carbonation.

Overall: Interesting flavours which perhaps could be described just as ‘sour smoked prunes’. I’m unsure if this is past its prime, but if there was just a little more roast malt, chocolate, cocoa to balance the sour part, it would’ve been even better.

Picked this up at Whole Foods on a lark. Didn't know what to expect from a Kiwi made smoked barrel aged porter. Lots of smoke, both in the taste and smell. Could see it being too much for some but I really liked it. 11% alcohol was fairly well hidden. All in all I thought it was well done.

I thought this was one of the better porters I have had. Definitely can taste and smell the smoked flavors and aromas and thought this was very drinkable for it's Alchohol content.

My bottle is 2011 version and pours the darkest mahogany almost black broen hue with an impressive very creamy khaki almost cappuccinosque two finger head and lacing here and there just from looks I know im in for a treat, smell is alot of smoked wood and malts, American oak and pepperberries, the feel is full and slow with cameos from smoked malts, funky yeast, light chocolate amazingly only a touch fresh oak and finished with a dried fruit semi bitterness, overall im well impressed by this little beauty and yeah a little pricey but a must try for the smoked fan cheers.

Bottle pour at Shelton Brothers The Festival 2014 held at Crafted in San Pedro, CA.

2011 vintage.

Pours an almost opaque super dark reddish-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, smoked malt, cocoa, bourbon, and wood aromas. Taste is much the same with smoke, cocoa, bourbon, and wood flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast and smoke bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with a great balance of smoke and barrel aged qualities all around.

Serving type: bottle.
