$12.50 NZD per 500ml pint at Pomeroy's, Christchurch, New Zealand.
American Stout. 5% ABV. Hopped with Centennial.
A: Black body. Khaki-tan head dissipates within a minute or so.
Sm: Roasted barley. Coffee like roast. Malted milk balls.
No overt chocolate (malt) or Centennial.
T&Mf: Smooth, wet, medium-bodied to full-bodied, well carbonated. Ought to be a bit more dry to accentuate the roast methinks.
Subdued roasted barley doesn't bring any bitterness with it, nor do the downplayed Centennial hops. Not getting any overt coffee.
Thin chocolate malt, obvious dark malt sweetness. Malted milk balls redolent malt sweetness (think Whoppers for the Americans).
O: Drinkable, but it needs more roasted barley and doesn't deliver on the coffee-like roast/bitterness front (which is the brewery's marketing claim, not my own expectation). More Centennial hop presence would be welcome to add pine, oil, resin, etc.
Many seem to hold 8 Wired in high regard for their stouts specifically, but this isn't particularly strong despite checking the requisite boxes for the style. Still, it's easily an above average stout, just not one that will make any waves to an audience experienced in the best international expressions of the style.
