Rocks Porter is based on a traditional Robust Porter but with a twist from the norm. The beer pours with a tan head and appears jet black. Made with ale and crystal malt, the beer departs from the norm by using chocolate malt to darken and flavour the beer and flaked oats to give a silky smoothness and stiff beer foam. The chocolate and crystal malts give a rich complex malt flavour and balance to the beer. Our interpretation of this beer is a bit different than most, but still pays homage to the great Porter beer style.

Pours black with a large tan head.
Nose shows bready, nutty and toasty malt along with soft apple notes.
Similar flavours, some acidity, a litte roast and bready malt. Pretty restrained.

I was a little tough on my first review of the Porter. It's ok..it pours an opaque dark with no head and no lace. The scent is coffee. The taste is coffee. The Mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's ok not the greatest porter but not bad either.

Pours a dark chocolate colour with beige head consisting of small visible bubbles and lovely thin, crisp lace. Bit paler than ideal, but otherwise good.

Smell is very roasty-bitter. Plenty of spicy espresso on that with a hint of cocoa dust, cedar wood and some whole nutmeg. Just whispers of sweetness on an otherwise roasty-spicy nose. Nice.

Tastes a bit watered-down. Roasty flavours all the way through but that never fill the palate, and end up a bit sour with instant coffee and charcoal notes leading to an essentially savoury palate. Hint of cherry on there and some caramel grain, but it's mostly just a disappointing porter palate, where the flavours are right but they seem too afraid to let themselves shine.

Thin mouthfeel, bit of fizz showing through but largely watery. Meh.

A bit of a ramp up of flavour would be welcome here. It's an OK porter and can be drunk quite easily but it's just uninspiring.

Rocks have restyled all the beers to have a common theme running through the range. This one, previously "Cribbs Porter" is now entitled "The Butcher". Suitably menacing for their dark ale.

Pours (not really that dark) a ruby brown colour, opaque, although due to some pretty heavy hazing. Head is fluffy and off-white. Body is moderate, and the head doesn't leave a lot of lace. Looks nice though, I like the haze in the body.

Nose is pleasantly dark, giving yeasty and black notes like vegemite, with a touch of roasted nutmeg. Slight whiff of artificial caramel. Quite nice.

Taste is roasty and pleasant enough, but with only a little sweetness. (It balanced nicely with the skillet cookie I was eating at the time, cutting through the sweetness there). Some bitter peanutskin characters, and the body is light and surprisingly clean--no weight behind it.

Tasty enough, and it matched the sweet dessert nicely. I feel it needed more body to be able to stand up on it's own, but it's again a very solid effort from Rocks.

Dull, earthy, slightly chocolatey aroma. Fairly boring.

Deep brown colour with no head.

This has got a decent earthy note with touches of coffee. It lacks overall depth.

Medium-body with medium-low carbonation.

Fairly average overall with a dull flavour. This could be more refined.
