On-tap at Harts. Reviewed from notes.
Dark chocolate with ruby highlights. Minimal beige head of milkshakey appearance, abates to a film and collar.
Nose is pretty much all barrel. Very hard to peek behind the rum character initially. With effort and imagination, some mild chocolate milk notes emerge.
Taste is where this comes into it's own. The barrel character integrates beautifully with base porter notes of dark fruits, milk chocolate and marinated cherries. What I imagine a rum-and-raisin milkshake might taste like.
Lightish body, but clean, buzzy carbonation lifts the palate nicely and helps to cover what would likely otherwise be large gaps in the palate.
Nice barrel treatment makes for a satisfying and easy-drinking experience. Very interested to see these barrels applied to a host of bigger dark beers.
